I didn't know left handed people were stereotyped as artistic

There was some pseudoscience going around a while back about people can be left brain or right brain thinkers. Supposedly it came down to your dominant hand - meaning lefties are artistic and righies are logical. It's been thoroughly debunked but people still say it to me fairly often.

Wow. I've heard about the left and right brains as such but never seen people translate that to an artistic personality... I guess it might be a cultural thing. If it makes you feel any better, I can confirm you it's not a universal myth.

I wonder if in the societies where the myth is popularized if left-handed people tend to be more creative because they are told that by nature they are more creative?

To put it another way, are left-handed people more creative because of their "right brain dominance" or because they are nurtured in a culture that expects them to be more creative?

I hear it often, too, even though I work in a science-related field.

I'm left-handed and Autistic, does that count?

That's not fair. You get two days of recognition.

But yes it counts

Raise those smudged hands high in remembrance of those beaten in school for using the correct hand.

[–] whileloop@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I remember in Kindergarten when my teacher tried to force me to write with my non-dominant hand.

We should all take up writing backwards like Da Vinci. Benefits include:

  • not smudging everything we write
  • not getting as many cramps in our hands
  • making our writing much harder for righties to read.

Today is finally the recognition we deserve and desire. Bow before us mighty Lefty's as we celebrate an entire day devoted to our awesomeness. You other types may have 364 days of being normal, but today is ours!

Quick, the lefties are starting to feel equal! Scare them off!

As a left-handed person and to all of my other fellow lefties, on this glorious day may I suggest that you find yourself a pair of left-handed scissors.

If you have never had a pair of left-handed scissors as a lefty you do not know what you are missing out on. It's $15 to experience the joy of cutting things easily without having that weird finger cramp after you are done.

I finally made the jump last year and I have been kicking myself for all of the years I've missed out on the joys of having left-handed scissors.

I am left handed but not artistic.

I'm not left handed, but it's my bday so feel free to hold my left hand to celebrate the day. :3

[–] AcidSmiley@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

I've heard statements that lefthandedness correlates very strongly with transness, and when i look at how many left handed trans people i know, i'm inclined to believe that.

[–] demlet@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Keep my handedness out of yer dern mouth.
