This invasion of a sovereign nation has caused so much death and damage.

Russians go home.

[–] gun@lemmy.ml -1 points 2 years ago

They are home. Ukraine is currently occupying Russian territory in Zaporozhye, Kherson, and Donetsk oblasts. This war can stop when they leave.

Why are there 4 downvotes 💀

Aint no way people actually support Russia

it's a much more complicated situation than is often portrayed, where everything is sublimated into homogenous good and bad guys, with no intersection

[–] object_Object@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

Yes, but I don't think it's radical to say that the ones invading another country should probably not do that

@object_Object @Unfunnyryan I feel like there are probably Russians who do, but that's pretty much it

In contrast, citizens in China, India, and Turkiye prefer a quick end to the war even if Ukraine has to concede territory.

i wouldn't say this is supporting Russia, more like wanting an end to this senseless violence (actually interesting how this is a virtually non-existent trend among westerners, i'm assuming because they've never had any proximity to similar violence and misery, and are therefore ready to sacrifice as many Ukranians as is takes) :(

What is actually interesting is how westerners are in such somber mood about Ukrops getting hammered as result of a war they initiated 8 years ago but not about, say, the 500k murdered in Iraq over bogus evidence, but yeah, I guess when they're not the ones delivering "freedom" all over the world, they feel out of place.

If you look at the actions India and China have taken in particular it's quite clear that they do support Russia. They have chosen to keep trading with Russia, and both hold the position that Russia has legitimate security interests that it's defending. Xi's recent visit to Moscow, followed by Chinese defence minister visit is hard to characterize anything but strong support. Many countries outside the west have also stated that they see the west as the principle party responsible for creating the conditions that led to the war. Lula recently stated this when visiting China which has angered Washington to no end.

Many countries are unwilling to take a stronger position largely because they fear retaliation from US, but continue supporting Russia economically and are aligning with the BRICS economic bloc.

I think another big factor is that the west has brutalized many countries around the world for over a century now. There is a lot of anger and resentment at how people of these countries have been treated.

oh, you meant countries, then ye, sure

i was referring mostly to support on the level of an individual, which is a lot easier to outline and quantify imo, because everything is more nuanced on a country level

I think you'll find there's likely even broader support on individual level than the government positions. If you talk to people from the global south, most of them have positive views of Russia and negative views of the west. Russia has never colonized the global south and it hasn't been waging wars against these countries. Of course, views aren't homogeneous in any country, and you'll find differences of opinion everywhere you go. However, overall views tend to align against the west.
