There's very few games I've ever purchased, and usually to go against some circlejerk against a developer I trust. The best thing about not doing so and waiting is a cheaper, more patched up, and usually more complete experience at a lower price. And the latest one involved a developer that had built a reputation with its extensive season pass DLC, decided to cash in and crash its reputation for money, which results in no more preorders from even the exception.
I can still understand that people who game more socially probably don't have the patience, as it excludes them socially. Maybe there should be game clubs that take after book clubs, where everyone agrees to play such and such an old game each week.
