Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Why should it be layered?
Only way to install it with support for port forwarding on Fedora Atomic spins.
Because that is the only way official to install the Proton VPN app on Fedora systems??
What about the flatpak?
The flatpak is unofficial. It's maintained by someone from the community.
That's very true. It's probably safe, but even still, it's safer to use the layered package. I should've pointed that out. Thank you for reminding me. (-:
Only use it if you (can) read the the Flatpak manifest and make sure its safe. Clone the repo and build it yourself locally if you trust the code but want to recheck each update.
