Not sure if it has anything to do with the Star Trek series, though… or does it?
V’ger seems like a direct nod to Star Trek 1.
I mean, the fact that the Fediverse is not called The Federation is a missed opportunity.
There is absolutely nothing stopping us from calling it the Federation.
Or from assembling a group of federated instances of various fediverse apps called The United Federation of Instances.

Nah, it’s called Voyager as a nod to Apollo, the most popular Reddit app that had to shutdown because of the api changes and the UI inspiration for wefwef/voyager. Been following wefwef/voyager since the beginning so I figured I’d chime in!
