National defense is not what the “tank” in tankie refers to.
Yes, it is. It originated as a slur against the British Communists in the CPGB that sided with the USSR against the fascists in the 1956 Hungarian counterrevolution. The rebels lynched hundreds of Communist Party members and released fascists from prison to help overthrow the Communist leadership. This was national defense, by definition.
