There are no true democracies, they are all some form of republic.

Republic is a form of state and democracy is a form of government.
Those things are not mutually exclusive, to the contrary.

There are democratic republics, there are democratic monarchies, there are totalitarian republics and many other combinations of state form and form of government.

To say a country is not a democracy because it is a republic is like saying an apple is not a fruit because it is green.
