I can't say I'm surprised we've arrived at this point but still... If this is the precedent set then there's surely not much more that can be done. Thing that sort of sickens me is seeing just how many people are immediately lining up to take over as mods for these subs, but maybe I'm just naïve.
We have no way of knowing how many of those accounts are real, and how many are puppets trying to make it look like mods can be easily replaced. And even if those signups are legit, imagine being a novice mod on a team of novice mods, with some highly valuable mod tools on the verge of disappearing. Between the inexperience at modding, the inexperience at interacting peaceably with other mods (which can sometimes be more of a challenge than dealing with regular users), and poor tools to handle the workload... it's gonna be a bumpy ride, to say the least. I'd expect a lot of turnover and a lot of stuff falling through the cracks.
All I see is “let me be mod so I can follow the will of the users and keep it NSFW.”
