One that has helped me and my gf is a small whiteboard. We attached it to the wall in the kitchen right next to the fridge. When things get low or run out or we find a recipe we want to try we add it to the list. When it's time to get more stuff we just take a picture of the whiteboard and use that as the list. When we get back we erase things we got but don't erase what we didn't, or couldn't get enough of.
It's made shopping less memory based and lets us see what we actually use and don't so we even save money just by using a cheap whiteboard.
We have this but it's a magnetic one that sticks to the actual fridge, the other one proved too far away... Sigh.
+1 for whiteboard but watch out, it's so easy to forget to take a pic of the damn thing.
