Main goal while in office was to eradicate public schools altogether
In a 1997 op-ed, defended unlimited donations of "soft money" in political spending. DeVos compared government limits to Big Brother of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Betsy was a founding board member of the James Madison Center for Free Speech which the DeVos family funded and whose "sole goal was to end all legal restrictions on money in politics."
"My family is the largest single contributor of soft money to the national Republican Party. I have decided to stop taking offense at the suggestion that we are buying influence," she wrote. "Now I simply concede the point. They are right."
Married to former Amway CEO Dick DeVos. Amway is an American multi-level marketing (MLM) scheme that sells health, beauty, and home care products. In 2012, Forbes magazine listed his father as the No. 351 richest person in the world, with a net worth of approximately US$5.4 billion.
Mackinac Public Policy Center, which had played a major role in the passage of right-to-work (anti-union legislation) in Michigan, was funded mainly by the Charles G. Koch Foundation and the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation.
