I feel like this is some attempt at damage control, considering the sudden influx of Tesla trashing as of late.

I don’t think it’s that. Renting a Tesla is a bit of an annoying experience because you’re forced to use a keycard to get in the car and have to place it in the right spot to start the car. It’s not something that’s intuitive.

Using a phone key makes using the car substantially more friendly but wasn’t available on rental cars because the rental company would need to add the renter's Tesla account to the car and that would be painful to maintain across a fleet of vehicles.

For those without a Tesla this replaces one problem for another -- you'd need to install an app to use your phone as a key and for the other features.

For those with a Tesla, it is an interesting idea. Your seat, mirror, and other settings would sync to your rental away from home.
