As with /r/411 this is where you ask what Community you're looking for but not finding. Perhaps a bit more helpful now that some communities are only found on certain instances.

Found/new community announcements - there are numerous "announcement type communities - see https://lemmy.ca/post/612532

There is also !wowthislemmyexists@lemmy.ca

Before you request There are several resources available to find communities and resources and these have been pinned to the top.

Is there a community meant for anything that doesn't currently fit into the existing communities?

Like, just a general chat?

Well, every instance has a "main" community that all users of the instance are sub'd to by default (if I'm not mistaken). Here on lemmy.ca main its sidebar says

Since everyone on lemmy.ca gets subscribed here, this is the place to chat about the goings on at lemmy.ca, support-type items, suggestions, etc.

Most instances have general /c/chat communities.

chat@beehaw.org

chatter@lemmy.ca

there is also:

casual@lemmy.ml

ukcasual@lemmy.world

Thanks! Looks like beehaw's chat is what I'm looking for. It saddens me that there's so little activity in the others.

Its always lonely to be an early adopter. Just stick with it, help others find their way. :)

Before Digg's implosion and the first influx, Reddit was a ghost town too.

There's also https://links.roobre.es/c/misc, which in theory sounds something like what OP is looking for.
