Always keep a gun next to your bed, that way you can reach to answer a phonecall and accidentally shoot your neighbours through the wall.

The apocryphal story is that beds used to be supported/made of many ropes that would regularly need to be tightened to maintain form. So it was a reminder to snug up on these ropes.
