Installing PipeWire is what made it work for me. It has much better bluetooth codec support than PulseAudio.
Looking over synaptic, I have PipeWire already installed. The OS is essentially untouched/out of the box.
Seconded on PipeWire if not already installed. Also, I'm not sure what the built-in Gnome audio mixer is, but you might check installing/running pavucontrol from the command line and seeing if it allows you to select different output devices.
I installed pavucontrol, but there were no differences in options. I also made sure the Pods were set as the output and not muted.
