I had attempted to begin contributing code and those things left a sour taste in my mouth too. Ultimately I think wait until another open source option comes along and see if I can help at all.
It looks like someone else is creating a client, memmy. https://github.com/gkasdorf/memmy
No releases as of yet though so can’t comment on that.
According to the GitHub page it’s heavily inspired by Apollo, so that’s got me quite excited.
