I drove there coming from Woomera. I was in a 1975 fj50, the small box-y type. There was a huge headwind, and I ran out of petrol about 5kms out of Coober Pedy. Luckily, it is slightly downhill into town from that direction, and I literally rolled into the servo on the edge of town.

Nice. Good condition FJs are hard to find nowadays. Were they easy vehicles to drive?

No, it was fairly difficult actually. Gearbox was off, cylinder timing got eventually worse no matter what I did, and the steering column just wouldn't stay aligned. Fun car for a while though. Ended up leaving it parked in an inner suburb unlocked hoping it would get stolen so I could claim the insurance. It didn't get stolen. Ended up selling it for $1500.

Very interesting. I've always liked the idea of owning and driving the old BJ42 ones but they are few and far between. The more "affordable ones have lots of rust while the good condition ones are very expensive.

I sometimes think that this is one of the few occasions where my idea should stay an idea. :p
