How about instead we respect everyone's decisions and preferences? Free as in freedom, is that not what the Open Source community is about?
That's how I've always read this meme format. It literally says the non-preferred option is still brilliant.
Sure, but when people are excited about something, they're going to trash-talk. It's healthy to have the freedom of debate these choices.
Anyone can choose to install whatever software they choose on their device, but the "free" in free software specifically refers to the freedom to read and modify the source code.
Under the philosophy of the FOSS movement, all proprietary software are by definition unethical.
Since Lemmy and the larger fediverse is the choice for many free software advocates, it's natural that you see this kind of backlash when fundamentally unethical software to interact with it is released.

Right, but sync isn't even free in that regard. It serves you ads, tracks you, and is closed source. I'd happily financially contribute to it if it were actually FOSS
