This week on Limited Resources Marshall and Luis go over the big picture archetypes in MKM from top to bottom. The white decks are winning more than anything else, but the overall archetype scheme is more closely packed than you may assume. Key points for RVR draft:

All the cards in the set are reprints from previous sets happening on Ravnica. If you’we been around for a while, you know what that plane is all about. If not, there’s a single most important thing to keep in mind: There are ten 2-color guilds, each with its own signature theme.

So, in the vast majority of drafts, you want to be drafting a 2-color deck. However, it’s perfectly reasonable to splash a bomb, from a adjacent guild. For example, say you’re playing Selesnya (green-white). You could easily play Assemble the Legion. That’s possible, as there’s plenty of mana fixing available.

Keep in mind, that each card in your deck should ideally met at least one of the following criteria:

  • It works well with your guild’s theme, or;
  • It’s just a strong card on its own.

Obviously, if both conditions are met, that’s especially great. So, let’s take a look at the archetypes and figure what each archetype is trying to do.

There are a couple of ways you can try to approach Khans of Tarkir drafting. My favorite strategy is to position myself for a 5c/good stuff pile early on, then move into a specific archetype/clan if I keep getting passed good cards.

  • Simic Bear Punch
  • Ugx Morphs
  • BGx Toughness Matters
  • Practically any clan combination

I've been really enjoying this set, it seems a bit slower and more complex to me than the last couple. All the colors except green seem decent and even the aggro decks need a lot of synergy to function well.

I went 7-1 with this Dimir Descend deck on the back of [[Aclazotz]] and two Uchies. The playset of [[Echo of Dusk]] was really good - turns out a 2 mana 3/3 lifelink is pretty dece.

I was basically playing a control deck and ramping to my big guys 🙂. It's crazy to me how much Tolarian Terror get passed by the bots...

I know mono-color draft decks aren't unheard of, but in a format where everyone (myself included) seems to be splashing a third color, I thought this was interesting. Okay, technically I'm also splashing white for the Adventure side of Imodane's Recruiter.

I considered a blue version that used the two Splashy Spellcasters and even a three-color version for Belluna Grandsquall, but this deck worked out alright.

The latest Magic set Wilds of Eldraine has ten two-color draft archetypes centered around classic fairy tales, enchantments, and epic adventures.


Magic: The Gathering's newest expansion set, Wilds of Eldraine, will unleash the power of fairy tales and eternal slumber when it releases on September 8th. Wilds of Eldraine takes place on the post-Phyrexian invasion plane of Eldraine, a world besieged by wicked witches and the nightmarish horrors of Ashiok the planeswalker. All the fairy tale action will unfold not just in Standard when this set releases, but also in Limited formats like draft and sealed.

Wilds of Eldraine is a large, complicated expansion set that brings back the best elements of Throne of Eldraine, like Adventures, Food tokens, and "enchantments matter" themes, while also adding exciting new effects like Bargain, Celebration, and even token enchantments called Roles. There's a lot to unpack in Wilds of Eldraine for Limited, including the inner workings of its 10 two-color draft archetypes and the fairy tales that they represent. Knowing all this can give any draft player a serious edge at their local game store's Limited events.
