In March 2003, the American country band the Dixie Chicks publicly criticized President George W. Bush, triggering a backlash. At a concert in London during their Top of the World Tour, the lead singer, Natalie Maines, said the Dixie Chicks were ashamed Bush was from the same state as them, and that they did not support the imminent invasion of Iraq.

The Dixie Chicks were one of the most popular American country acts at the time. After the statement was reported by the British newspaper The Guardian, it triggered a backlash from American country listeners, who were mostly right-wing and supported the war. The Dixie Chicks were blacklisted by many country radio stations, received death threats and were criticized by other country musicians. Sales of their music and concert tickets declined and they lost corporate sponsorship. A few days later, Maines issued an apology, saying her remark had been disrespectful. She rescinded the apology in 2006, saying she felt Bush deserved no respect.

As someone who's broke and working through hard things, I feel bad not being able to help when there are other people going through it.

But we're all trying our best out here. Don't make it easy for libs and beat yourself up. Help others if you can and take care of yourself if you can't. Drink water.

Read this: I don't want this to turn into a struggle session so please do not engage in such a way.

Does Marxism being "scientific" matter? Or does this need to want to cling to science to prove its legitimacy actually hinder its effect? I've been wrestling with this question for the past day and I still don't have a concrete opinion.

Anyone notice during elections how willing liberals are to engage in community aid by driving random people to the polls? Imagine if they were that willing to help others with something meaningful.

I don't follow them and don't know if there has been any self-reflection since 2020. But if there hasn't I would have thought they'd been so embarrassed by now they'd have logged off

Environmental advocates say Elon Musk’s xAI is running gas turbines to power its data center in Memphis, Tennessee, and emitting air pollutants there, without authorization.
Memphis already has a major smog problem, and the county where the xAI data center is located received an “F” grade from the American Lung Association for its poor air quality.
Musk said in July that xAI had begun training its AI models at the facility using 100,000 of Nvidia’s H100 processors.

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is being accused by environmental and health advocates of adding to the pollution problem in Memphis, Tennessee, by using natural gas burning turbines at its new data center, and doing so without a permit.

The company said it was opening the data center in June in a former Electrolux factory, shortly after announcing it had raised $6 billion at a $24 billion valuation. In a post on X last month, Musk boasted that xAI had begun training its AI models at the facility using 100,000 of Nvidia’s

H100 processors.

The Southern Environmental Law Center sent a letter this week to the Health Department in Shelby County, where Memphis is located, and to a regional office of the Environmental Protection Agency on behalf of several local groups, asking regulators to investigate xAI for its unpermitted use of the turbines and the pollution they create.

The letter notes that xAI “has installed at least 18 gas combustion turbines over the last several months (with more potentially on the way).”

The company has been using the turbines to power the facility, but its long-term plan is to use power from the local utility, Memphis Light, Gas and Water and the Tennessee Valley Authority.

MLGW told CNBC that it started providing 50 megawatts of power to xAI at the beginning of August. However, the xAI facility requires an additional 100 megawatts. The utility has installed more circuit breakers, and started making improvements to transmission lines in the area to prepare for the added power consumption by xAI, as well.

Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of social media company X, started xAI in 2023 to develop large language models and AI products that aim to compete with those from Google, Microsoft

and OpenAI. The company’s initial product is a chatbot called Grok, billed as a politically incorrect alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. AI models generally require massive amounts of power for data training and processing.

“This plant requires an enormous amount of electricity,” the advocates wrote in the letter.

Some of the 18 turbines are visible from the road around the property and, according to the advocates’ letter, emit air pollutants called nitrogen oxides (NOx) that add to a longstanding smog problem in the area. Shelby County has been given an “F” grade by the American Lung Association for its smog.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website, even low levels of nitrogen oxides in the air can irritate a person’s eyes, nose, throat and lungs, causing them to cough, experience shortness of breath, tiredness and nausea. Breathing high levels of nitrogen oxides can cause “rapid burning, spasms, and swelling of tissues in the throat and upper respiratory tract,” and other serious health problems, the agency says.

Businesses in Tennessee are typically required to obtain permits to operate the types of turbines used by xAI. The permits would establish the allowable concentration of emissions, and determine efficiency requirements for the engines. ‘Significant health and environmental impact’

A permit would also mandate air quality testing to make sure users aren’t polluting more than they had planned to in the area due to issues like poor engine maintenance.

“The overarching concern remains that there has been very little transparency and opportunity for public input for the xAI project,” Amanda Garcia, a senior attorney with the Tennessee office of the Southern Environmental Law Center, told CNBC. The added concern, she said, is that it’s “already having significant health and environmental impact on the surrounding community.”

The groups wrote in the letter that the xAI turbines already in place have the capacity to emit an estimated 130 tons of nitrogen oxides annually, which would rank them as the ninth-largest source of the pollutants in the county. Their combined capacity could power around 50,000 homes.

Musk-led companies have a history of building facilities or operating high-emissions equipment without obtaining permits first.

CNBC reported earlier this month that SpaceX operated a water deluge and cooling system at its launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas, repeatedly discharging industrial wastewater there without a permit, a violation of the Clean Water Act.

Musk’s tunneling venture, The Boring Co., was also fined by Texas environmental regulators for a similar issue — discharging wastewater into the Colorado River in Bastrop, Texas, without applying for permits or installing appropriate pollution controls.

Tesla was cited by a California air pollution regulator in 2021 for installing and modifying paint shop equipment that emitted hazardous air pollutants, without a permit and reviews as required by the Clean Air Act.

The Shelby County Health Department said in an emailed statement that the EPA “regulates companies that use mobile gas-burning turbines,” and that the county gets involved in the regulation of “stationary gas-burning turbines” if they’re in the same location for at least a year.

“Given the mobile nature of the gas-turbines in question, and the length of their operation for less than 364 days, SCHD does not have current permitting authority in regards to these mobile gas-burning turbines,” the department said.

The EPA regional office covering Memphis didn’t respond to a request for comment. Nor did xAI.

Why does the Biden administration support the Israeli genocide and war crimes even in the face of virtually universal condemnation, at massive expense, and to the point of totally debasing the rules-based international order? Why do it? People fall back on narratives about the power of AIPAC in US elections etc., which is real but also doesn't capture the whole story.

The truth is that US capitalism depends on it, and the US ruling class broadly understands this fact. The key thing to understand is that capitalist growth and accumulation in the imperial core (the US, Britain, Germany etc.) relies heavily on the appropriation of cheap inputs and resources from the periphery and semi-periphery of the world economy (broadly, the global South). They need the South to remain a subordinated supplier within global commodity chains.

In order to maintain this arrangement, it is imperative for them to suppress sovereign economic development in the South. Because the "problem" with development is it means Southerners begin to produce for themselves and consume their own resources. This makes resources and inputs more expensive for the core, which constrains consumption and profits. Economic sovereignty in the periphery threatens capital accumulation in the core.

To avoid this, the core states constantly intervene to prevent or crush any movement or government in the periphery that seeks national liberation and economic sovereignty. The US started to support the Zionist project in the 1960s, and invested heavily in the Israeli arms industry, with the explicit intention of using Israel as a staging ground—a massive military base—for counter-revolutionary interventions against rising Arab socialist and national liberation struggles in North Africa and the Middle East. The US could not accept the prospect of sovereign development in that region: liberation movements had to be crushed or destabilized and they used Israel to help them do it.

Israel is not an "ally" in the conventional sense. It is a proxy. They support Israel for the exact same reasons that they have backed assassinations or coups against liberation leaders across the global South: Mosaddegh, Lumumba, Nkrumah, Allende, Arbenz, Sukarno, Sankara... Israel assassinates movement leaders in the Middle East and interferes in regional political processes, all in concert with the US, but it also constantly bombs the frontline states, destabilizing their societies and economies and forcing them to divert resources toward defensive spending rather than industrial development.

The Zionist project is intolerable not only because it is murderously hell-bent on ethnically cleansing Palestine, but because it creates chaos and instability across the whole region. The core states used South Africa in the very same way. The key reason that Western powers supported the apartheid regime in South Africa – against overwhelming international condemnation – was because it served as a highly militarized Western colonial outpost that was geared up to run counter-insurgency operations not only within South Africa, but also in Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, the DRC, etc., leaving immense violence and chaos in its wake.

The vast majority of the world—and international law itself—supports Palestinian liberation, but Palestinian liberation would constrain Israeli power and open the way to regional liberation movements, and this is strongly antithetical to the interests of Western capital. So this is the situation we are in. The Western ruling classes are willing to back obscene violence in Gaza, and shred the liberal values they claim to believe in, because they want to maintain the conditions for capital accumulation and geopolitical hegemony.

You cannot appeal to imperial power in moral terms. The only way the US will stop propping up the Zionist regime is when it becomes too costly for them to do so. This will come down to the strength of the resistance and regional political and military opposition, but also the extent to which people can coordinate boycotts, divestment and sanctions, and punitive measures under international law.

I've used bold text for key points and separated the text into paragraphs for better organization.

Critique of nate silver book. Rather good on deficiencies, rather lacking on the fact that betting requires events to happen. You can maximize expected value all you want, you still choose where and when you do it and frequently you can change the event by yourself, instead of being passive observer.

This means that if another country's military is capable of ending a person's life, the USA must find a way to one-up that somehow. Otherwise both fighting forces are equally lethal.

What does she have planned? Do they have a weapon that can destroy the eternal soul?
