The following is a cross-post from my mastodon thread

In the wake of metas enshitiffication I have seen people recommend Signal and Matrix as private open source alternatives to meta products. In the following thread I will outline how if your goal is software freedom anti surveillance and anti censorship the best option for direct and group messaging is neither Signal nor Matrix but instead the up and coming https://simplex.chat/

Signal is centralised meaning its vulnerable to censorship it almost got backdoored by uks online safety bill and that bill still has a damocles sword clause hanging over signal. Signal is also not anonymous, your account is linked to you through your phone number, if your contacts are compromised then your conversations can easily be linked back to you and your contacts all be correlated. In contrast simplex is like having "a burner phone for every contact" meaning even if one contact is correlated you have no consistent identity that can be compromised by default. Also simplex has a custom onion routing protocol to hide your ip from relay servers by default and it makes it very easy to connect over tor if simplex is blocked in your country im pretty sure signal doesnt do that. Matrix has been floated as potentially being a decentralised and e2ee open source alternative to Signal, but Signal shares one massive pro with SimpleX which is that both have post quantum encryption meaning that quantum computers that many researchers say are a few short years away from being able to decrypt all historical data that is encrypted using classical techniques ie not post-quantum encryption - such as the private messages you are sending across matrix today Afaik Matrix currently has no plans to add post quantum (PQ) encryption today and previously they were relying on it being implemented in MLS a standard that Matrix has been trying to adapt to their decentralised framework for years with stagnant process. Whats more afaict the motion to add PQ to MLS quietly expired and wasn't renewed so it's likely not coming any time soon. SimpleX has PQ on top of their classical encryption implemented and working today and you can download the app and have PQ rn (the additional classical encryption is insurance in case it turns out PQ has some classical attack vector, hybrid encryption is recommended by sec researchers at this stage) In conclusion both Signal and SimpleX are PQ unlike matrix but SimpleX and Matrix are decentralised and less vulnerable to censorship than Signal, while only SimpleX supports Tor connections and protects ur IP with or without Tor, and has no persistent unique identifier creating a "burner phone for every contact" scenario where compromised contacts cant necessarily be used to correlate ur other contacts/groups simply by looking at ur phone number/username in those groups

Heres some evidence and argumentation to support building post quantum encryption now, state and capital are hoovering up encrypted data rn to decrypt for profit as soon as it becomes cheap enough to do so with quantum computers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UrdExQW0cs

And here's the best explainer of SimpleX on youtube, sorry about the racist thumbnail the guys a right winger but his knowledge on OPSEC is valuable. If you don't know why the thumbnail is racist search "Terry Davis glow in dark" (the search results for which I have to give a racist slur cw for but theres no slurs in this video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cRu98XSap0

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (AP) — A man who fired a gun inside a restaurant in the nation’s capital after a fake online conspiracy theory called “Pizzagate” motivated him to do so nearly a decade ago was shot and killed by North Carolina police during a weekend traffic stop.

Edgar Maddison Welch was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by officers in Kannapolis on Saturday night, according to a Kannapolis Police Department news release. One of the officers recognized the car as the vehicle of someone he had arrested and who had an outstanding warrant for a felony probation violation — Welch, police said.

When the officers approached the vehicle to arrest Welch, police said the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at one of the officers. After he was instructed to drop the weapon but didn’t, two officers shot Welch, authorities said.

Emergency responders took Welch to the hospital and he died from his injuries two days later, according to the release. None of the officers, nor the driver and another passenger, were injured.

In 2016, authorities said, Welch drove from North Carolina with an assault rifle to Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Washington after believing an unfounded conspiracy theory that prominent Democrats were operating a child sex trafficking ring out of the pizzeria. The fake theory, dubbed “Pizzagate,” began circulating online during the 2016 presidential election.

He entered the restaurant armed, and as customers fled the scene, Welch shot at a locked closet inside. After realizing there were no children held captive in the pizzeria, Welch peacefully surrendered. No one was injured.

At the time, Comet Ping Pong’s owner, James Alefantis, said the conspiracy theory and subsequent violence from it traumatized him and his staff.

Welch later pled guilty to interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition and assault with a dangerous weapon in 2017. His judge, now Supreme Court Justice Kentaji Brown Jackson, subsequently sentenced him to four years in prison.

City of Kannapolis communications director Annette Privette Keller confirmed the man who died was the same one involved in the “Pizzagate” incident.

The shooting death of Welch, a resident of Salisbury, is under review by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the officers who fired at him are on administrative leave, per the department’s protocol.

The peaceful streets of Oslo are growing even calmer as the city drives noisy machines off municipal building sites. For locals and builders, the drop in decibels is a welcome side-effect of a goal to keep city-managed construction projects free from toxic emissions. The mandate, which is the first of its kind in the world, came into effect on 1 January .Construction is one of the biggest sources of urban air pollution, but even forward-thinking cities such as Oslo have struggled to clean it up.

The Norwegian capital has led the way in replacing the petrol and diesel that powers its construction equipment with biofuels, which do little to heat the planet but still foul the local air. It is now moving to battery-powered machines.

Yolk is a cross platform dotfile management tool with a unique spin on templating, sitting somewhere in between GNU Stow and chezmoi.

Have a look at our documentation for more information on how to get started!

The Concept

Yolk allows you to use simple templates in your configuration files without having to worry about keeping a separate template file and the generated config file in sync. This is achieved through a design that allows all templates to be included inside comments in your actual configuration file.

Just found out about this project, it should be very useful for users looking to keep dotfiles organized among different machines with ease.

Program for skilled foreign workers pits Trump and Musk against Bannon – and progressive Bernie Sanders

Steve Bannon, one of the architects of Trumpism, is one the most influential voices on the right. Bernie Sanders, the veteran US senator from Vermont, is among the leading figures on the progressive left. In these divided times, they have found common ground.

As Donald Trump returns to the White House, a bitter row over H-1B visas – designed to bring skilled foreign workers to the US – has exposed the delicate threads that tie together his broad coalition – and that of the Democrats.

Trump’s appointment of Sriram Krishnan, an Indian American venture capitalist, as an adviser on artificial intelligence sparked a backlash from within his base – fueled in part by anti-Indian racism and criticism of Krishnan’s views on immigration. This was the stage for an acrimonious spat over the merits and pitfalls of the H-1B scheme.

I have a 'screenshots' folder on my laptop. I would like my steam deck to send the screenshots that I take on it to that same folder, or have it synchronized somehow. What is the best or most intuitive way of accomplishing this?

Hello r/selfhosted !

I've just released Dagu v1.16.0. It's a tool for scheduling jobs and managing workflows, kind of like Cron or Airflow, but simpler. You define your workflows in YAML, and Dagu handles the rest. It runs on your own hardware (even on small edge devices such as Raspberry Pi, so no cloud or RDB service dependencies. Install it with a single, zero-dependency binary.

Here's what's new in v1.16.0:

  • Better Docker image: Now uses Ubuntu 24.04 with common tools.
  • .env file support: Easier environment variable management.
  • JSON in YAML: Use values from JSON data within your DAG.
  • More control over when steps run: Check conditions with regex or commands.
  • Improved error handling: Decide what happens when a step fails.
  • Easier CLI: Named and positional parameters.
  • Sub-workflow improvements: Better output handling.
  • Direct piping and shell commands: More flexibility in your steps.
  • Environment variables almost everywhere: Configure more with environment variables.
  • Web UI improvements and smaller save files.

Dagu is great for automating tasks and pipelines without writing code. Give it a shot!
