I was able to change it through options in my account settings. How did you get the app to show up with that picture? Mine just shows up with the android?

I think it's unintended behaviour in this case. The app is supposed to follow the user's settings for sorting first, not the server's.

ahhh, I thought I saw one of the admins say that they were locking it to 'local' to diversify lemmy's internal communities.
