Seems like I've been on their waitlist a pretty long time!

I've been using it for a while. I stopped.

My two issues were security concerns because Beeper needs to unencrypt my data from all platforms to re-encrypt it to send it to me, which sounds like a huge single point of failure; and regular connection issues where I had to switch back to the original app.

Great concept, but not quite there yet.

Not to mention Beeper claims to be open source, but it actually isn't. That's a HUGE red flag. This could have changed of course, and anyone's free to prove me wrong, in fact I'd be glad if someone did. Because running a local Beeper instance over trusting them with your data is ALWAYS the best choice.

Why do you say it’s not open source? I’m using one of their bridges right now to send iMessage to my local matrix server.

[–] Dee_Imaginarium@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I'm confused why they're saying that? Their Github is right here and you can setup your own instance with bridges just like you have.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can self-host matrix with all the bridges you want for similar functionality. That's what I do, and it works well.

Here is a good option for how to set it up: spantaleev/matrix-docker-ansible-deploy

I was on the list for 267 days, and on Friday I finally got my invite half way through throwing my server out a skyscraper window trying to get a matrix server/ bridge spun up locally. It was worth the wait.

I'd been on the waitlist for more than a year, but finally on. I downloaded the app a little while ago to keep tabs on my progress through the waitlist and they definitely have been speeding up the process of getting people onboarded to be fair.

I got my invite a couple weeks ago, so they have definitely been working down the wait-list.

I got an invite but haven't claimed it yet. Not really wanting to use it now... Too many issues that I have read about security wise. Also they are trying to build a super-chat app that just calls into everything else. Historically this approach has not worked, and I don't see it suddenly working now.

Agree. I just got my invite today. BUt now im....concerned.

I kind of feel like a weirdo for not chatting a lot, I guess?

Yeah invite list sped up quite a lot last few weeks, often 5k a day
