Iran on Tuesday launched a major missile attack on Israel, firing scores of rockets as air raids have sounded off in all parts of the country.

Sounds of explosions were heard in the cities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The attack comes several days after Israel killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a massive strike on southern Beirut, and comes amid Israeli cross border raids into Lebanon.

This is a developing story...

Another night of wondering whether I'll wake up to WW3 tomorrow.

[–] TimeSquirrel@kbin.melroy.org 34 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The good news is that afterward, some redneck drunkard scientist with a spare Titan II missile somewhere in Montana will give us warp drive.

What's the reference of this

in star trek, humans invent warp drive in a ship based on an old missile after ww3

[–] geolaw@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

WW3 technically started in 1947

Iran has the right to defend itself

[–] BigMacHole@lemm.ee 23 points 1 month ago

This is ABSURD! Only ISRAEL is Allowed to Defend itself!

I was about to post that a US official said a strike from Iran was imminent

I didn't realize "imminent" meant just 3 hours...

Is this gonna start world war 3?

[–] protist@mander.xyz 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not likely. How many similar Middle East conflicts have already happened since WWII? Why would this one be different

[–] HorseRabbit@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They're both nuclear powers.

[–] protist@mander.xyz 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nuclear powers are famous for lobbing nukes, right

[–] HorseRabbit@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 month ago

At least one of them is.

[–] Xaphanos@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

We've been sliding into it for months.

[–] 5redie8@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No we are not lol the middle east has been fighting for... Most of world history at this point

[–] Eyck_of_denesle@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This somehow sounds racist. Does world history mean after WW2? Also I'm more inclined to say "middle east has been under attack" instead of fighting.

[–] 5redie8@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

On what planet is that racist? That geographical region has been unstable for most of world history. Zero further implication. I'm trying to not be an asshole about this, but accusing someone of being racist is a real dick move when even Wikipedia has to divide its pages on the topic into different eras.

[–] Eyck_of_denesle@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

"List of modern conflicts in the Middle East", wdym world history?

I'm not accusing you and I apologise if it looked like that, I'm just asking you directly. I see a lot of comments like "nuke middle east" from rw nutjobs idk why this reminded me of that. I apologise.

[–] sandbox@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I guess it’s a bit of a lazy summary, because it sort of implies that the region has been fighting among itself just for reasons, rather than the region being conflict prone because of colonialist foreign policy. I wouldn’t say it’s racist though.
