MODERATORS

I've been really enjoying my time here lately and I have noticed things.

  1. discussions are more chill. On Reddit people would get into flame wars over things and here while it happens it's not as bad, and I actually enjoy spending time here.

  2. people are nicer.

  3. moderation is amazing.

  4. diversity in thoughts is also amazing.

EDIT:

Image is made by me, please credit me if you use it. Other than that, it's on a 'do what you fucking want' license. Meaning, have fun and do what you want with it, I'm not your mom!

Same. The fragmentation is actually a good thing imo. Makes it easier to keep the extremists contained in their own choleric bubble.

[–] CinnamonTheCat@beehaw.org 21 points 1 year ago

Also makes it much more civil when big changes happen. Like beehaw actually made a post about defederating as they care about our opinions. Instead of just going "we're doing it, fuck you". They care about us. And if we don't like them, we can just change instances. That's ultimately our call, and we don't lose out on the content, we can still view it if we want to.

100% - I am so amazingly refreshed every day about the quality of interactions I’ve had here. I don’t miss it at all, I’m glad this isn’t reddit.

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I miss some niche communities that haven't started here yet

[–] CinnamonTheCat@beehaw.org 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Don't worry! They'll appear. And if they don't, you can make them yourself! You have the freedom to do whatever you want and no one can tell you otherwise.

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've made two already. But I mean I miss having active niche communities, but I know they don't just start instantly with a user base

[–] CinnamonTheCat@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

Fair enough. But together we can make it happen! I've seen malicious compliance reappear, it's just a matter of time.

[–] Steeve@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Twitter is killing itself, Facebook and Instagram just hit 3 billion daily active users, and Reddit still has hundreds of millions of active users. I'm definitely enjoying it here, but this meme is inaccurate and cringy.

Also, asking for credit when you didn't credit the original comic's creator is a bit ironic.

[–] mobyduck648@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah this is like comparing the Titanic with one of her lifeboats.

[–] Jon-H558@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah, somthing like a agricultural muck spreader casting"enshitifcation" accross them would be accurate...but they are no where like dying people just love living in shit.

Insert the “I made this” meme.

I am having a similar experience. I've had a pretty serious reddit problem and since I moved to /kbin, Tildes, mastodon, feedly, and of course a few lemmy instances, I'm a happier person. Seriously.

I guess if you don't subject yourself to social media that aims to magnify hostility and rage for clicks, it has a positive impact on your life.

I, for one, am feeling thankful to spez for placing the final straw, and, more seriously, feel indebted to beehaw, Tildes, and mastodon admins for doing such a great job creating a positive community.

[–] sylverstream@lemmy.nz 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I noticed that as well! People are nicer here. Perhaps because it's all new etc.

Let's see how it goes. Reddit used to be nice too haha.

[–] CinnamonTheCat@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

If they stop being nice or you feel hurt don't be afraid to change instances. The fun of it all is that moderation is dependant on the instance you're on!

[–] Stumblinbear@pawb.social 3 points 1 year ago

If I had to venture a guess, I think it's nicer because the minority of hot-headed people haven't come over, so the level headed are more likely to actually comment

[–] Dee_Imaginarium@beehaw.org 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I completely agree! It's a little sad as I go through my saved links and comments through the years before I delete my account, remembering the discussions and communities. But that version of Reddit died long ago.

Lemmy has been really enjoyable though, I'm looking forward to seeing the communities and platform develop over time

[–] Jon-H558@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

that version of reddit

Yeah that's the thing, I have not jumped due to API thing (although I am worried about how it will be moderated). I was looking to jump for last year or more, but nothing scratched that itch....between big subs being so big, being shouted down for having an opinion and slowly building up bans (when you post every day for 12 years you are likily to post something mods don't like in that time). Been looking to get out ofr a while.

[–] CinnamonTheCat@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

Long live the revolution!

[–] RadioRat@beehaw.org 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's a really nice vibe so far! I wonder if the lack of downvoting threat makes it easier to share ideas.

[–] chris@l.roofo.cc 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What do you mean? I can downvote things.

[–] RadioRat@beehaw.org 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ah, I'm still getting used to the fediverse thing. On Beehaw, there's no downvote button.

[–] mrmanager@lemmy.today 9 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Which is how it should be. Reddit destroyed all discussions by having downvotes, and discussions died because people deleted their downvoted comments and left the thread.

I kinda regret not moving here sooner. It's so much nicer here!

[–] Bread@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

I love the information I can find on Reddit, but at the same time I don't miss Reddit at all.

[–] WhipTheLlama@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

A better comparison is formerly popular social news/link aggregators such as Digg and StumbleUpon. Digg dominated just like Reddit for a while, and then it died when users flocked to Reddit after an unpopular change. The similarities are uncanny.

[–] Vex_Detrause@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I find that fediverse is perfectly adequate internet fix for me as Reddit was. I checked back last night to quickly see the malicious compliance by r/pics and r/gifs. Also checked out other sub like r/science. With the state of Reddit right now I enjoy Lemmy/kbin far more.

[–] CinnamonTheCat@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

I Straight up deleted reddit from my phone, begone corporate app!

Facebook is sadly one of the most popular.

[–] worfamerryman@beehaw.org 8 points 1 year ago

In the country where I live, it is basically the internet. Want to find a business? Look for their Facebook page. They rarely have a website.

[–] primbin@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago (6 children)

I don't know, it's been difficult to access a lot of information without reddit, especially when reddit makes up half my google results. I hope people start using the fediverse to share information, but we'll have to see if it catches on.

[–] CinnamonTheCat@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

While that is true don't be afraid to ask questions! !technology@beehaw.org would be glad to answer all your tech related questions

This is true. But you can use Reddit just as a source of information. You can always bring that back here and share/contribute that info with others.

Reddit has had a good decade of a head start over Lemmy instances. It's no surprise there's so much more information indexed.

[–] panikas17@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I also read somewhere that kbin/lemmy etc are not indexed in search engines.

[–] Wiring8084@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So true. I add reedit at the end of my query to get solutions for very specific problems. Now after that whole fiasco, it feels wrong to do that anymore. I hope this gets good traffic in the future.

[–] Dee_Imaginarium@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You can try "forum" or "forums" instead and it'll pull from Reddit, official MS boards, and sites like Tomshardware. Since all those things come up in the search engine as forums.

We just need to post tons about our niche interests until fediverse sites start ranking higher due to having fresher more up to date information, bringing us back to the time where search results yielded hits from a range of specialized forums, except this time they're all connected.

[–] Jon-H558@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

-reddit... minus Reddit on all Google search

[–] Kalkaline@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't know that any of those platforms are dead yet, but I like that this platform is growing.

[–] CinnamonTheCat@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

This meme does apply to me personally, as they are dead to me.

[–] RandoMcGuvins@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Reddit feels like people are yelling to be heard. Kbin feels like a conversation. I'm also impressed with how chill kbin is.

I miss the niche communities but until they are made I can post to the main mag.

[–] gaytswiftfan@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

I miss it. It was the only massively used social media without a for you page (obviously that doesn't apply anymore) and I've learned a ton and developed so many hobbies from it. Obviously I enjoy beehaw but I'm not going to pretend it's the same experience (maybe if the community grows)

[–] throwawayforratings@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Why isn't Google+ on here?

[–] Gormadt@beehaw.org 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

We all try to forget about Google+
