I hope they take precautions against them exploding because I've heard that is not fun when it happens.

I don't believe that's a concern with LiFePO4 batteries which (I think) are used in the majority of home installs. They're less energy dense, but AFAIK, they're not able to enter thermal runaway like other lithium battery chemistries.
