Gentoo is.. well I wouldn't exactly call it nice, but neat? :)
I've played around with it a bunch but grew impatient with it. The compile times was terrible for me back then.
Gentoo and Arch do have their niche though. Takes a bit longer to set up but they're quite customized to your liking when you're done.

I remember people setting up build servers on their home network to ease the burden of compiling on slower machines back in the day as well.
@nlm yeah, I'd like to have a little Gentoo build server in the cloud some day for all my machines but thankfully there are a few binhosts out there already doing much of the churning, and even the official tree has -bin packages for the resource hogs.
Oh nice, that ought to make things a bit snappier!
