Edit: Thanks for the award!

Alright. I keep seeing people talk about how the drones are searching for WMDs and/or dirty bombs, or that it's a drill for the same purposes.

I have a M.S. in inorganic chemistry. I don't have experience working with radioactive materials, but I'm at least somewhat field-adjacent. I welcome anyone with more experience and knowledge to chime in.

Radiation is not something we can simply detect based on presence/absence alone. You get a stronger signal when you're closer to it. Different types of radiation come from different radionuclides, and each type of radiation travels a different distance and has different energy associated with it.

Nuclear weapons are shielded, meaning they are designed to not give off much/any radiation. This is because you don't want to get a massive dose of radiation just for standing near it. Furthermore, if you are going to hide a WMD in the city, it's going to be in a building or underground, and not somewhere up in the sky for a month.

Since radiation is detected more strongly when the detector is close to the source, it would make far more sense for trucks to be driving around with radiation detectors in the back. Like how in The Dark Knight Rises, they used radiation detectors to track which truck had the bomb inside, but in reverse.

You would not track ground-level radiation from up in the sky. It just doesn't make sense.

People keep bringing up this paper, which discusses the use of a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector affixed to an unmanned helicopter to track radiation. If you read the paper, you learn three important things:

  1. The very first sentence of the abstract defines this technology as intended for "[a]fter a nuclear or radiation event." It seems they intend it to be used for a partial-leak at a nuclear plant.
  2. These HPGe detectors, which Google suggests are most effective when only centimeters away, have a maximum simulated (not even tested!) range of 100 m. And the sensors rapidly lose their ability to detect radiation as the distance increases.
  3. HPGe detectors are not cheap, and require liquid-nitrogen coolant or equivalent. The government might have infinite money to spend on drone technology, but they aren't going to be flying these things around without telling the military about it, because to lose even one would be a tremendous financial loss.

Now, having said all that, let me clarify that I do believe there are drones flying over NJ, and now other parts of the world as well. I'd estimate 90% of the videos we see are just planes, helicopters, or fakes. But 9% of them genuinely seem to be man-made drones. And 1% of the videos are still unexplainable. This 1% includes the glowing orbs that reportedly rise out of the ocean, the giant triangular "motherships" hovering over the clouds, and the massive crescent/boomerang ships that almost seem see-through.

I personally believe that the man-made drones are looking for the 1% of unexplainable sightings. And that 1% has the government so freaked out that they are flying these drones extrajudicially, because they can't reveal that they are looking for something like this without risking whistleblowers.

Now, assuming they are U.S. Government drones, here's why they would tell us "we don't know what they are, but they aren't a threat". It all has to do with that 1%, whether it's foreign tech we've never seen, or genuinely NHI:

  1. If the gov't says they are a threat, people panic. That's bad.
  2. If the gov't says they aren't a threat, and they're correct, they look like they're in-the-know and in control.
  3. If the gov't say they aren't a threat, and they're wrong, well the world suddenly has bigger things to worry about than blaming the U.S. Government.

It's worth mentioning that point #2 above also explains why so many people claim to have the truth. They make a plausible statement, and if it's right, they gain credibility. If they're wrong, who cares?

Something is happening right now. And I don't think the government knows what it is. I don't think anyone knows what it is. But please don't accept a theory as fact just because it's plausible.

Just an interested UK redditor who is deep into the New Jersey news.

"We were looking at the time, the Sergeant reported, seeing the drone. We have flight radar mapping capabilities, and we did not see anything indicating it was a plane."

The local government also state they have had advanced drone technology for eight years in the area, and the speed of their drones do not match the speed of those reported.

This part is the craziest because it proves that nobody is in control of the situation.

A wave of mysterious drone sightings over New Jersey’s Morris and Somerset counties has prompted demands for answers from state and local officials, including New Jersey’s governors. The unexplained presence of these drones has not only raised public anxiety but also highlighted a significant gap in the oversight of airspace security. One of the most alarming incidents occurred when drones forced the cancellation of an emergency helicopter landing at Raritan Valley Community College, delaying critical medical aid. Despite the involvement of multiple agencies—including local police, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, and federal entities like the FBI—there has been no official explanation for the drones’ origins or operators. This absence of clarity has left the public and officials questioning who, if anyone, is in control of the situation.

The lack of information has led to broader concerns about the transparency and efficacy of federal intelligence and security agencies. If agencies like the FBI, NSA, CIA, or Homeland Security have information on the drones but are withholding it from state authorities and the public, it suggests a troubling lack of accountability. Such secrecy could be justified if national security is at stake, but without any statement or evidence to that effect, the silence itself becomes suspicious. On the other hand, if these powerful agencies genuinely have no idea who is operating the drones, the implications are just as concerning. It would point to a failure of the systems designed to monitor and control U.S. airspace—a critical vulnerability at a time when drone technology is becoming more accessible and sophisticated.

This situation reflects a deeper issue about the control of U.S. airspace and the adequacy of existing regulatory measures. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has introduced rules requiring drones to broadcast identification signals, like a “digital license plate,” but the effectiveness of these measures is now in question. If these mystery drones are evading detection, it raises questions about enforcement and technical loopholes. If they are identifiable but their operators remain unknown, it suggests either a breakdown in inter-agency communication or a more covert agenda at play. For state officials, particularly governors, to be left in the dark indicates a serious breakdown in coordination and trust between state and federal agencies—a situation that could have far-reaching implications for future crises involving emerging technologies.

Ultimately, the New Jersey drone mystery underscores the growing challenge of managing airspace in an era of rapidly advancing drone technology. Without clear answers, the public is left speculating about everything from rogue hobbyists to foreign espionage. State officials’ demands for transparency are justified, as they are tasked with protecting public safety and coordinating emergency responses. If intelligence agencies have information and refuse to share it, it calls into question their commitment to cooperation and public accountability. Conversely, if no one knows who is controlling the drones, it reveals a glaring weakness in national security infrastructure. Either way, this unresolved situation highlights the urgent need for stronger oversight and communication between federal, state, and local authorities in the age of autonomous aerial technology.

UFOs have been sighted in multiple locations throughout the United States, with the bulk of sightings being reported in the New Jersey area starting on November 18th. Sightings have been occurring every night since then from 6-11PM and range from 4-180 sightings per night. They have primarily appeared as drone-like craft, up to six feet in diameter, and operating in a coordinated manner. They’ve avoided detection by traditional methods (e.g. helicopters, radio frequencies) and have not been identified as hobbyist drones or related to the Department of Homeland Security. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said the objects are “very sophisticated” and “the minute you get eyes on them they go dark,” when questioned at a press conference on December 9th.

On Thursday, the White House, FBI, and Homeland Security said they had no evidence that the sightings reported in New Jersey posed national security or safety threats. White House spokesperson John Kirby told a news briefing that federal authorities were investigating the sightings in cooperation with New Jersey state and local law enforcement. Most of the sightings have been of aircraft operating lawfully, he said. Kirby’s statements caused immediate pushback from a number of local and county officials.

“These are observations over Picatinny Arsenal by military personnel there and at Naval Weapons Station Earle,” said Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden in an interview with Fox News. “It is concerning. These accounts are of sophisticated movements, by larger objects ranging 6 to 7 feet in radius, moving pretty fast and sometimes traveling, shutting their lights out and traveling at a rapid pace.”

On Tuesday, Lt. Col. Craig A. Bonham II, Picatinny Arsenal Garrison Commander, said there were 11 confirmed reports of sightings between Nov. 13 and Dec. 6. “Confirmed” meaning a police officer or security guard visibly witnessed a drone after/while receiving a report, Bonham said.

Assemblyman Paul Kanitra, R-Ocean, saw the drones for himself Thursday evening as they hovered over Manasquan Inlet. Kanitra noted the irony of the military bases confirming there were drones over their critical facilities a day after the White House said many drones were actually manned aircraft. Maybe, he said, they need to start communicating with each other.

“The federal government needs to be coordinating more and talking to each other," Kanitra said. "It’s also showing just how unprepared they are, and just how much they are making it up on the fly. Nothing could be more damning than individual bases and secure facilities confirming there are (drones) present over their air space yet then some clueless White House spokesperson tries to diminish it and say that it’s not real. They look foolish and it’s obvious to everyone how foolish they are.”

12/5 - A medevac helicopter was unable to pick up a seriously injured patient due to drones hovering near the landing zone. Brian Serge, supervisor of security at the public college near the scene of the crash, said they never found out what the actual drones were. “It’s kind of a mystery. We were asking around about that, but nobody knew anything,” he said.

12/8 - Two pilots flying from Denver to Eugene reported seeing 3-4 UFOs at multiple altitudes. Some were reported as moving in a circle, like a corkscrew pattern and the pilot was cleared to maneuver to avoid them if necessary. The pilot spoke in more detail after the event to a local news outlet regarding the specific behaviors of the objects and shared video of the event.

12/9 - New Jersey governor Phil Murphy said, “We don’t see any concern for public safety.” Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia (R-NJ) said that "minimizing the risks, when they’re really unknown, is beyond foolish. You cannot say that something poses no threat when you don’t know its origin and you don’t know its intent and you don’t know its owner."

12/12 - The FBI and DHS issued a joint statement regarding the sightings saying ““We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.” They continued by saying “We take seriously the threat that can be posed by unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), which is why law enforcement and other agencies continue to support New Jersey and investigate the reports. To be clear, they have uncovered no such malicious activity or intent at this stage. While there is no known malicious activity occurring in New Jersey, the reported sightings there do, however, highlight the insufficiency of current authorities."

"I’m not supposed to talk about it," Rep. Frank Pallone tells me of the New Jersey drone briefing Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas gave the NJ congressional delegation.

“It was for members,” Pallone’s aide tells me. “It wasn't for the public.”

“The mysterious drones that have been plaguing the skies over the Northeast shut down the runways of Stewart International Airport Friday night, prompting Gov. Hochul to demand the feds step in.

“This has gone too far,” Hochul said in a terse statement Saturday, in which she noted the runway of the Orange County facility was shut down for an hour because of the unidentified aircraft.

Stewart Airport services both commercial and military flights and is adjacent to a New York Air National Guard base, where the 105th Airlift Wing is stationed.”

Original Title: There should just be a masterpost for theories on what these things are, the sub is being flooded with too many of them. Theorizing isn't bad but these do get really repetitive and they just end up cluttering the place.

I get wanting to share your perspective and thoughts, but the reality is that what you have to say has most likely already been said by like 5 different people. I'm not saying your thoughts are worthless I'm just saying that it'd be better if we contained all of it in one place as to not crowd the feed.

I mainly come here for news and recent developments regarding the drones so having every other post be a theory I've already seen 10 times that day does get a little annoying

The fact that Mr. Kirby is reading his statement as opposed to just facing the press spine up is telling in itself isn't? Ive watched him over the years and he has 90% of the time just handled questions straight up. This reading from a script is not Mr. Kirby's normal behavior. He was handed that to say.

Now with that said...yes no doubt some people are getting carried away in the hysteria....mistaking planes or copters for drones or UAPs....so he can plausibly say that and get away with saying that...

but how quickly we forget..

This started a few yeaes ago in Colorado n Kansas. They then reappeared at Langley in VA then onto the UK where they were seen over THREE US military bases where coincidentally nuclear weapons were being moved. Then they started appearing in droves in NJ, NY and PA.

The National Security Agency is well aware how feeble the aeverage persons mind is and how quickly we can casually forget things that just happenned weeks/months prior. They take us for fools...and unfortunately..most of us are. Take Trump getting elected for example.

There is NO WAY IN HELL that there isnt something anamolous going on here nor that it cant be corroborated. Notice he speaks in vague terms. Cant be corroborated by whom? "Some are just planes" . Ok....what about the other sightings that arent? Or..."The Coast Guard doesnt believe there are ships out there"...ok but what about the CG reporting a dozen of drones following their ships?..."They arent violating military air space" now that IS a straight up LIE or should I say misleading since..no they aren't technically violating air space above military bases because they are OURS!! Theyve been seen ove MBs in the UK, in VA and they are now over Picatiny in NJ.

Im sticking to my theory..the drones are ours...they are pretty sophisticated drones of various types...but they are either a smoke screen to distract from the NHI UAPs that have ALSO been witnessed at ALL of these sites....OR its a military preparedness drill for God knows what. I believe its the former due too how conspicuous and lit up they all are like they WANT your attention to purposefully distract you. It would also fully explain why NONE have been shot down OR followed to their source.

Either way they are completely LYING to the American Public about what is REALLY going on. Just like they did 4 years ago in Colorado and Kansas. Same situation, same exact lame BS explanations. Maybe the CO/KS operation was its first live drill? Seems the case.

A couple weird things here. A seemingly convincing video is posted. It gets a lot of traction. Then an airtight debunk is posted. Now, normally, this is the subreddit operating as intended. This is what we want.

The "off" part is how the debunkers always use the phrase "I want to believe" and how the comment sections are flooded with arguments and ridicule. Dismissive mocking about belief in aliens or little green men. Claims of mass hysteria as if nothing is happening.

Planes and balloons have always been the most common misidentified objects on this sub, but lately, a lot of obvous bait videos from odd accounts are getting posted. Then in comes the friendly skeptic with the X-files quote. As if they can't help the urge to sneak in a subtle insult your intelligence. It's kinda funny in a way.

It seems like the objective is to convince the wider world that there is no story here. Kill it before it spreads. The media is even using stock drone footage and bokeh orbs like they don't have professional camera operators.

Clearly something is happening. The entire state authorites, governors, and citizenry (aka the people ACTUALLY witnessing the events) are not all mistaken. There are objects in other countries and states being seen by pilots and trained professionals. We've had multiple hearings with sworn testimony in Congress, seen AARO and DoD caught in obvious lies, yet still, so many accounts completely in disbelief.

Don't let intimidation tactics prevent you from posting the things you see if you want some extra eyes to help you identify something. UFOs have always been the most ridiculed topic in American history and I feel like there is significant effort to get us to disengage. Honestly, thank you to all who put themselves out there and post with genuine intent.

It doesn't matter what you believe. Stay skeptical. (you ARE on the internet) Be friendly. Keep an open mind. Don't be afraid.

And don't burn yourself out arguing with bad faith weirdos.

If you've noticed weirdness from weirdos on our weirdo sub, talk about it here.

Edit: Wow. I didn't expect so many people to feel attacked by this post. Someone even deleted their account. I just wanted to support people continuing to post. Must be over the target.

  • I obtained established and well documented video of stars intentionally filmed "out of focus", which creates what is commonly referred to as the "Bokeh" effect.
  • I obtained the recently posted New Jersey live news footage that was strongly upvoted by the r/UFO community.
  • I placed the two video samples side by side so that we could compare and contrast the resulting video to determine if the live news footage is reliable evidence of a UAP, UAS, drone, etc - or simply a tantalizing aftereffect of the subject being out of focus.

I'd love to get your honest thoughts and opinions - check your biases at the door before watching the video! Let's use some old fashioned scientific review and come to a concensus. Oh, and let's remember not to take ourselves to seriously 24x7!
