Hey! Reddit refugee here. I got rips of new episodes of Love Island here for ya. New episodes get uploaded within ~30 min after the show airs. Enjoy!

I can see images, which is nice.

Just curious if there is a note of what media can be uploaded and if this can vary by instance.

jpgs seems fine....but webm, gifs, mp3, mp4 etc I have no idea about. I couldn't see an obvious way to upload videos and instead of trying 64^4^ different media combos as an image thought I'd ask.

Apologies if I've missed something obvious.

Lemmy.fmhy.ml FAQ (lemmy.fmhy.ml)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Kaizen@lemmy.fmhy.ml to c/freemediaheckyeah@lemmy.fmhy.ml

Q: What is Lemmy?

A: Lemmy is a self-hosted FOSS Reddit alternative that is a part of the "Fediverse". Lemmy gives us the freedom & full control over our community, unlike Reddit.

Q: What is the Fediverse?

A: Think of email - no matter which email provider you use, you are still able to seamlessly communicate with others who don't share the same provider. The Fediverse (or โ€œFediโ€) is basically the same concept, but for social media. The Fediverse is a collection of thousands of independent social media servers that communicate with each other seamlessly. This means that the millions of users on these servers can interact with each other as if they were on a single social network.

Q: What is the point of this Lemmy instance?

A: This Lemmy instance was created to provide a home for those migrating from Reddit, it's a general lemmy instance that welcomes (almost) everything including piracy and NSFW.

Q: How do I join?

A:

  1. Register an account on https://lemmy.fmhy.ml/signup
  2. Login, and then join communities!

You may create an account on any of the instances we federate with, and interact with our instance and communities. The list of the servers we currently federate with: https://lemmy.fmhy.ml/instances

Q: I'm new to this and I'm still very confused about all this where can I learn more?

A: You can find a collection of beginner's guides here.

Q: How do I make a community on FMHY's instance?

A: Just click create communiity and follow the basic setup.

Q: Why is my feed empty? How do I see other communities from other instances?

A: Communities will only show in โ€˜Allโ€™ of you instance if someone in that instance has searched and subscribed to it. Try to visit other instances and search their interesting communities on your own instance so there is a better federation among all instances.

Subscribing to as many communities as you can would help grow your instance much better.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and weโ€™ll do our best to answer as soon as possible.

For instance: https://lemmy.ml/c/asklemmy looks vastly different to https://lemmy.fmhy.ml/c/asklemmy@lemmy.ml Despite being the same community, a lot of posts and comments are hidden.

As someone who isn't just looking for a place to discuss digital piracy, but also look for friends and to slowly move away from Discord, should I use Revolt or Divolt? I can't decide, and I don't know if I can handle having both accounts.

132

As in the title. The sign up/login page here was stuck for me after clicking the submit button (the circle keeps spinning infinitely). No request blockage from addons as far as I can tell. I unhappily switched to a Chromium based browser and worked instantly. I wonder if others experience the same.

I went over to z-lib.is and found that first, my old account was no longer recognized; and second, it wouldn't let me access any books. It just redirected me to some page asking me to purchase a "lifetime premium membership." What's going on there?

ETA: Z-Library's domain was taken down some time last year. They're now available through TOR, and the onion link is on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z-Library

Don't give your money to whoever is running the .is site!

Another big hit to the piracy scene :(

135

I'm still a little confused but I'm glad to be a part of this change that's taking place.

I recently got a 4k TV and so I'm really wanting to watch movies in 4k. They take up so much space that I can't really put them on a flashdrive to watch, and as there aren't any piracy streaming sites with 4k content I was thinking about using an old PC to make a media server on either plex or jellyfin.

My parents, who are okay with piracy streaming (fmovies.to) and even downloading are convinced that if I upload to a personal plex server, that it would be the same as someone uploading to a torrent website somewhere and that I will get swatted and sent to prison.

Is this a valid concern, or is it perfectly fine to upload pirated stuff to plex? Is there any chance at all that you could get into legal trouble for uploading your pirated media on plex?

137

I know people are confused about how fediverse works and how to use it. This is an attempt to compile a list of beginner's guides made by some amazing people on this topic.

I will update this list if any new guide is made so you can save this post for later. Also, if anyone has any good guide to add post it in the comments and I'll add it here.

Prepare for a large influx of users lol

My go-to for just about any movie or TV show. I use a rpi4 as a processor, chromium browser to access website. Ublock origin will keep the popups away. When you get a Bflix account logon, then save as a home page link. It's kinda like having an Amazon, Netflix, Apple etc account all rolled into one

As above, maybe too soon ๐Ÿคท it's not the book, it's the emailed pdf for $15. Feel free to DM me if u have it. Tx 4 reading.

Don't be a vote connoisseur here please. Redefine how you think about voting and participating.

Do you miss your communities from elsewhere. Well guess what, you are that core community now. If you want it back, the only thing holding you back is you. Don't wait on someone else to start posting. You don't need to worry about the perfect polished quality of your content or if it has been done before elsewhere. The current bar is, umm, poorly defined. No one is judging you. Call it practice. EVERY time you see something interesting, get in the habit of posting it please. Maybe go out of your way to grab a reference or two and post them.

Along these lines, think of how unsure and uncomfortable this may seem to most of us former lurker connoisseurs. You can play hard and thick skinned all you want, but you know exactly what post or comment you posted elsewhere that got the most votes or interaction. Why? Because it matters to you. So upvote everything you can. It matters to someone else too. Don't upvote just for the value or interest you have in the content. Do it just to say "hey, thanks for making the effort to participate and make this place a few lines longer." Please rethink how you handle voting, at least for now, think of a down vote as FU for participating, no votes as I wish you weren't here. We are all likely accustomed to a lot more interaction and validation in our own little niches. This is really an underpinning value of social media, we are here to engage with people, so tell people who are new and unsure about a new and different place, "hey, thanks for participating." You may not know or really appreciate their interests, but you can help us grow a core that can evolve into your favorite niches as the community grows. You are the core community. We can all make it grow if we make it a place people want to be.

After this post I had some discussions with lemmy.ml admins about how their plans to prepare for the new influx of users, and I wasn't filled with confidence.

So I decided to strike out on my own and setup my own lemmy instance. This should ensure that discussions should continue normally during the blackout at least.

It's not just for piracy though. It also includes communities for my other interests in Generative AI and video game creation. So if you want to talk about that cool stuff, head on over!

If you already have an account here, you can continue using it by accessing the new community via https://lemmy.fmhy.ml/c/piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com

If you don't have an account here, you can access my lemmy instance directly here: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/piracy

Unlike the subreddit, we want to create a much more free flowing discussion about the wiki and piracy here, and people are welcome to make posts about getting help or discussing any specific site as well.

To get the ball rolling, is there anything you wish to see improved in the wiki or suggest adding some sites?

Hey peeps, I'm the head mod or reddit's /r/piracy. I'm setting up things to cover for lemmy.ml in case the load is too much on the 12th.

I'm now a mod on /c/piracy via my lemmy.ml and fmhy account so I can handle things if things go tits up.

Join the /c/piracy and let's keep things active.

FAQs

Q: Are we allowed to post here?

A: Yes, unlike Reddit where posting has always been off to keep the chances of the sub surviving as high as possible, here you may discuss & post freely as long as you follow our rules.

Q: I'm new, where do I find the FMHY wiki?

A: You can access the wiki via our website or from one of the mirrors in backups.

Q: Are the sites here safe to use?

A: Yes, we always scan files and research sites to ensure their safety before adding them. We also listen to the community, so if there's something you feel needs to be addressed, you're more than welcome to contact us. You can also find all the sites/software we've listed as unsafe here.

Q: What is Divolt?

A: You can read about it here.

Q: How can I contact you?

A: The best way to contact us is to join us on Divolt, where you can submit links, get help, or suggest changes to the wiki. You may also DM a community moderator or instance admin.

Q: How do I search the FMHY wiki?

A: You can find all the ways to search the wiki here.

Q: Can I edit FMHY?

A: Absolutely. This project was made by and belongs to the community, so we allow anyone to suggest changes via pull requests. We want this project to be as organized and useful as possible, so if you feel like you can help improve it, please do.

Q: Can I get an offline copy of the wiki?

A: The raw markdown files can all be downloaded from the backups page. The formatting should work on any sites or apps that support markdown.

Q: How do I view encoded links?

A: You can use any base64 decoding site or extension.

Q: Can I donate?

A: We appreciate that people want to support us by donating, but the reason we maintain this project is because it's fun and it's our desire to help others, not to make money. We never have and never will accept donations.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and we'll do our best to answer as soon as possible.
