I first saw the announcment in r/save3rdpartyapps (my only sub). The AMA is taking place at r/reddit, no time was given, just says "today"

I legitimately don't understand what they're hoping to gain from the AMA. Unless spez is going to start with "We were wrong, we're rolling back the changes" then there's nothing to be said. They ran over 3rd party apps that millions of their users use for no reason. This will be a total disaster.

[–] kitonthenet@kbin.social 23 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Isn’t there a long long history of people thinking they can AMA their way out of a PR disaster and end up stepping in it?

They probably don't understand how big this issue is and think it's just a small number of nerds who don't matter. I think they're taking the community for granted.

[–] LSNLDN@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think they’ll try to say they’ll improve the app’s accessibility, bot functionality, mod tools, something like that. It won’t work I bet

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

They’ve already said they’re focusing on the desktop app.

They get the stats, so they know how many users are using the various third party mobile apps. What they may not realize is how many of the moderators and content posters depend on third party apps.

I want to see it but at the same time I know I will regret it. The last time he never answered straight and avoided tough questions. It's not going to be different this time. I would love to be proven wrong though.

Edit: called it

[–] BigTechBlows@lemmy.one 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I read several comments claiming the ceo edited other people's comments and changed downvotes to upvotes during the last ama.

Probably a waste of time.

[–] tango_octogono@beehaw.org 13 points 1 year ago

Yup it happened, back in 2016 during the elections. He edited comments (and posts I think) in r/the_donald, people originally said "f*ck spez" and he edited them with the moderators usernames. Things like that.

Now, let me just say that I am aware of how toxic that sub was, but regardless spez opened a bad precedent

[–] HumbleHogfish@lemmy.one 16 points 1 year ago (2 children)

This is going to be epic. I can't believe how out of touch this guy is.

[–] RagingNerdoholic@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's a banana, Michael, what can it cost, $10?

[–] SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Sadly inflation means the scale banana is now about $14.50

[–] sexy_peach@feddit.de 5 points 1 year ago

Money really messes with the ability to understand normal people.

[–] connor@lemmy.one 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well that was a disaster. Guess I'll be spending time here now.

[–] BacardiT@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

Me too. That AMA was a joke and made me want to uninstall Reddit.

[–] empireOfLove@lemmy.one 11 points 1 year ago

"Today". Ah yes, a definite time. A well planned and definitely going to be productive AMA and not just a crazy panic-post after they realize that they fucked up super, super, super, SUUUUPER bad by literally having their own CEO falsely accusing 3rd party devs of blackmail, WHEN THERE WERE RECORDINGS.

Spez is, as usual, being an absolute buffoon. Nothing new under the sun.

[–] ADHDefy@kbin.social 10 points 1 year ago

The worst part about not setting a time is that I don't know when to start making popcorn.

[–] ANuStart@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The funny thing is Spez probably thinks this is good optics like he's proving he's ready to interact with the users, but we all know the entire thing is going to be a fucking peloton spin class in telling everyone to fuck themselves

[–] DidacticDumbass@lemmy.one 4 points 1 year ago

You can do it! Do not give up! Keep going and fuck yourself.

Soon you will look back and be amazed at all progress you made in fucking yourself.

You will wonder why you thought you could never fuck yourself this hard.

[–] mrwiggles@prime8s.xyz 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Jokes on him, I no longer have access to my account. I've already moved.

[–] SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I decided not to nuke my post/comment history as every once in awhile I get a reply on something from years ago, trouble shooting RPI or something with a certain linux distro or whatever, thanking me as they'd been searching for hours and my comment got them where they're going.

[–] mrwiggles@prime8s.xyz 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I didn't nuke my history, just deleted my handle so I couldn't use it anymore. AFAIK the posts are still up, the username is just [deleted]

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’m waiting until the end of the month to do that, so my handle going away lines up with everything else going away.

[–] SparkleLover@lemmy.fmhy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

We created value for the Reddit, so we’ll take that away by nuking activity.

[–] SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Yep, that's how it'll be.

[–] Equinox@lemmy.one 7 points 1 year ago

"AMA" has been up almost a half an hour and spez has responded a total of 5 times. Best AMA ever

[–] jamesj999@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago

Get the popcorn ready chaps!

[–] RagingNerdoholic@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago

It'll be like a trainwreck in slow motion

[–] Spellblade@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is the best internet drama I've seen in a long time.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

I still get Digg emails.

[–] LolaCat@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

This is going to be a massive shitshow, cant wait!

[–] empireOfLove@lemmy.one 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)
[–] mrwiggles@prime8s.xyz 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As usual, cherry picked questions get softball answers.

[–] heat@lemmy.one 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not to mention that he continues to diss the developer behind Apollo.

[–] empireOfLove@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

That's more than just a diss, blackmail accusations is rising to the level of libel. Spez is just being a shitbead Spez as always.

[–] Uniquitous@lemmy.one 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You would think he would have come into this with at least a few canned answers to the most likely questions. It isn't as if the concerns people have had been hidden; they were all out in the open and have been for days now. No excuse for him to be a deer in the headlights. He was either ignorant, or arrogant. Neither is forgivable in a CEO.

[–] troye888@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

I mean they had canned answers, just not for anything the users are angry about. He said multiple times that they will be focussing on mod tooling, which they have been saying for 8 years now with very little progress. So even their canned message were hilariously bad.

[–] Radicalized@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago

There’s too much money on the line, so he can’t be backing down. I don’t know for sure of course, but I think it’s just another “Listen, this is why we did the things we did” damage-control AMA. It will be entertaining regardless.

[–] troye888@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

Maybe we should get the lemmy server hosts to also do an ama, not to throw shade or anything (alright maybe a little)

[–] Uniquitous@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

"shit show" doesn't even begin to cover it. Guess that explains why the various Lemmy servers are creaking under the load.

[–] sprocket@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

It's going to be an absolute shitshow, I've already decided to sell my reddit account and delete sync so I'll just be there to see the drama unfold before I quit reddit for good 👍

[–] CCatMan@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Where are the AMAs going to be for lemmy?

[–] empireOfLove@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They say join us "here" so I'm assuming it is going to be the /r/reddit sub.

[–] CCatMan@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah, I mean if we have AMA here where would they be, but I don't know if that will actually happen...

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm guessing someone will create an AMA...uh...not sub...instance? I'm not familiar with lemmy terminology.

[–] mrwiggles@prime8s.xyz 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'd be willing to host an AMA community. I'm federated with lemmy.one, so it's certainly doable.
