I'm still quite lost when it comes to the fediverse. I created an account on the main instance, however as I understood more how it works, it seems like certain instances that interest me are "defederated" from this instance, and vice versa. So now I want to move my account to be able to see those instances, however I want to keep my follows and my posts I have on this instance. Is that possible? I read that fediverse is resistant to censorship in this regard, so there must be something I'm missing here.

Well, you can't. But you can transfere all your settings/subscribes/blocks etc.

Go to your account settings and hit "export" and save the file.

Make a new account on another instance

Go to that account's settings and import the file from your old account.

Thank you! That explains a little. Follow up question: If the new instance has defederated or "blocked" some community that I am following on this instance, will I still be able to follow them if I import the saved file?

If it has defederated from an instance you will no be able to see any posts from this instance‘s community

I'm not sure instance hopping is available yet, but you can always just sign up for the instance you want. However, Lemmy.world is not the "main" instance, Lemmy.ml is. Lemmy.world is the largest instance, which can cause confusion, but it definitely takes an active stance against Marxists and even Anarchists, which is why it is defederated from some of the major leftist instances.

Which instance are you trying to join? Which defederated ones from Lemmy.world do you want to see?

As far as we’re concerned there is no “main” instance, we don’t want there to be one, and we explicitly state that lemmy.ml is not that. What is lemmy.ml?

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thanks for that, didn't know! I was unaware that there was an official stance on the matter, though even nutomic makes the point that it's easy to conflate "flagship instance" with "main instance."

The core Lemmy devs admin this instance and use it as a guinea pig for new software releases, but otherwise it’s not special.

I think it was lemmy.dbzer0 (?) something along those lines. However when I use the tool to see defederated instances this one doesn't show up, however I can't find it when I search for it either.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You can see lemmy.dbzer0 from Lemmy.world I believe.

[–] FrostyDog@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

All I get when I search that instance is Mullvad VPN. Can an admins also block specific communities within an allowed instance?

[–] Majestic@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

They can block specific communities.

Previously there was this whole thing over lemmy world admins banning their piracy community so I would not be surprised if they were blocking certain dbzero communities as well out of their extremely cautious and risk averse nature.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

They can, yes, but I am not sure if that's your issue.

Either way, joining dbzer0 should fix your problem.

Like others have said you really can’t move, just make a new account

I’ve been on lemm.ee this whole time and I like it. I definitely recommend it if defederation is an issue for you since sunasaurus stance on defederation is it is the big red button and users should have the choice of making a blocklist (unless it’s stuff like illegal content thats defederated). You can even keep your username if it’s not taken on that instance and the beauty of the fediverse is you can move instances and create account as many times as you want

As for having a main instance. No such thing. This picture really helped me understand how federation works as the email anology people use didn’t really help me.

Anyways lemmy.world is just another instance, it just happens to the be the biggest. Lemmy.world ,.ee, .ml, whatever lemmy instance you can think of are completely independent. Think of them as separate websites if that helps. But due to the fediverse protocol they can all share content back and forth, it really is crazy when you think about it

But let me grab our welcome to lemm.ee to post if you wanna see if we’re a good fit for you, if not, happy instance hunting

Edit: Here’s the Welcome to lemm.ee post

Lemm.ee definitely looks interesting, however when I tried to sign up I just got some message that "Toastify is awesome". I'm assuming it's some sarcasm? Because when I refreshed the page all I got is error 503.

I'll give it another shot tomorrow. Thanks for sharing!

[–] xonigo@lemm.ee 5 points 1 week ago

Lemm.ee had some scheduled downtime a few hours ago when it was upgrading to the latest Lemmy software version. You might have ran into that when you attempted to sign up

[–] FlihpFlorp@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago

Unless I’m misreading your comment I was able to pull up the Sign in page just fine. Or are you getting the error after you put in your credentials

[–] bloubz@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

lemmy.world is in no way the main instance. There isn't really such an instance but if any it would be lemmy.ml of course, but it's not

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

I have moved a couple times. No need to get attached to something that is temporary.

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Jumping in to ask a question too, is there a way to see what instances are de-federated from?

Also if I don't want to see furry stuff in my time line etc i bloke the community not the instance right?

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

You can block instances, communities, and users.

Defederation means those instances are blocked by default for all users of the instance.

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah but as for levels

User is me or you

Community is like a subreddit ?

And an instance is Lemmy.world right?

You can export your subscriptions in the settings, not your posts though.
