Oh God he should have looked how she was as defence minister in Germany before suggesting this πŸ™ˆ

As if competency is anything to consider with these figurehead positions. All that matters is how well-connected they are and how willing they are to whore their office out for the Military Industrial Complex.

[–] tom@lemmy.fmhy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Exactly. Merit is irrelevant once they're in to these positions.

Ensuring Europes continued reliance on US defense by undermining NATOs capabilities tobbecome a self reliant organization.

Here you heard it first!

[–] Muetzenman@feddit.de 11 points 1 year ago

She sucked in every position. Defence, family or her undemocratic way to brussles.

[–] Blaubarschmann@feddit.de 37 points 1 year ago

Oh god, please no

[–] Quacksalber@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 year ago

No! Not Flinten-Uschi!

[–] daniel@feddit.de 17 points 1 year ago

Good time to be McKinsey I guess ...

[–] PlatypusXray@feddit.de 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That is actually very diplomatic. It would convince the Russians and the Chinese that NATO is really not a threat. On the other hand, it would really not be a threat anymore.

[–] azuth@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

NATO chief is an irrelevant position with zero power. Frankly when she was Dutch Minister of defense she had way more effect on NATO capabilities.

[–] ProfezzorDarke@feddit.de 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

German Minister of Defense. Source: Me, I had to suffer the news about her.

[–] azuth@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Right, my bad.

[–] EmoDuck@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

So after being German minister of defense she went on to be minister of defense for The Netherlands?

Not gonna lie, that's kinda impressive

The person who did deals with Pfizer over SMSs?

[–] NorskSud 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Considering that the EPP might get a full majority with the far right in the next European election I don't think this is good news. For the ones complaining about von der Leyen just look to the rest of EPP, Manfred Webber for starts, everyone looks so much worse... better to keep Ursula.

[–] Wirrvogel@feddit.de 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The world is doomed when Ursula is the best choice, but you are not wrong.

[–] Jagermo@feddit.de 10 points 1 year ago

So you can fail upward!

[–] Kapitel42@feddit.de 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well at least her old Nickname of Flintenuschi (Rifle Uschi) can make a comeback than

[–] daniel@feddit.de 5 points 1 year ago

I much prefer "Truppen-Ursel" ("Troops Ursel" I guess)

[–] matricaria@feddit.de 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Let’s just vote for someone else, ignore the vote and make her NATO Chief instead…

[–] HorriblePerson@feddit.nl 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Typical EPP move.

I really hate that they did that, cause the whole Spitzenkandidat process really seemed like a great way to get people to pay more attention to EU politics and the EU parliament.

[–] NorskSud 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

This is not confirmed yet. And anyway, can you imagine Manfred Webber president of the commission? It would have been so much worse. I'm in favor of the Spitzenkandidat if we get transnational lists and parties running with their European affiliation on the ballot.

[–] Sylocule@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

Do you think France or any of the others would agree to another German after Ursula? There’ll be cries of Germany running the EU

[–] gigachad@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago

Can you elaborate on what is not confirmed yet?

Manfred Weber would have been a bad choice, but Von der Leyens election was not very democratic

[–] foxblood@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Oh my god! No, just no!

[–] agarorn@feddit.de 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Lol. At least this wouldn't be a fail upwards.

And who should be head of EU council?

Her term is over next year, so that fits. Might even be the primary reason they extended Stoltenberg for one year.

[–] NorskSud 1 points 1 year ago

She's the head of the commission, the next one will also most likely come from the EPP, everyone else looks a worse option.

[–] tom@lemmy.fmhy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Once they're on the gravy train good luck getting them off it.

[–] Thintalle@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago

What the fuck. Will it ever stop?
