This is a bit of an off-topic nit pick, but for the sake of user clarity, especially as lemmy is still growing, I would like to ask you to refrain from referring to this community solely as c/games. This is because there are communities on other instances named games, and I've already seen a lot of recent refugees from reddit be confused about the nomenclature involved.
I understand lemmy.world is one of if not the largest instance, and I don't expect people to be this precise in their casual conversation. But it would go a long way for clarity if official communications explicitly used the fediverse format of !games@lemmy.world at least once, so there can be no confusion for other active and growing communities dedicated to the same topic.
Thanks.
Good point!
Thanks for hearing me out!
This is good. I knew what both r/games (more serious) and r/gaming (mostly memes) had and liked the separation.
This actually wasn't always the case. /r/games split off from /r/gaming when a few mods (including myself) got tired of discussion getting choked out my memes.
There was a mix of people being pissed, excited, and not caring, but I think it ended up for the best. Was a shit ton of work while we were modding both at the same time, but eventually all of us that created /r/games stepped away from /r/gaming and left that sub to its own devices.
games was so indescribably superior to gaming, it was incredible. Gaming was a flanderized parody of a circlejerk, with the stuff that as posted there. I saw a lot of great discussions on games, and patientgamers.
All respect to the change you guys made
I voted for no memes, and I'm really glad we got that, but one thing I want to mention is that it'd be good to have a /c/gamingmemes or something to redirect people to, rather than just a closed "no memes here". There's definitely an appetite for that content, and it seems gentler if there's another community they can be directed to.
(I thought about creating it myself but I've never really liked gaming meme pages, so I don't think I'd be good at hosting one 😅)
Yeah. The games sub was awesome at the old place but gaming one was a cesspit with occasional gems. We'll need that cesspit back in some regard. Casual and stupid content. "EA bad" etc
Glad to hear. I think there's obviously a place for memes, but I value discussion a lot more than image posts.
Now let's see about blocking photo posts and other low-effort garbage, too, while we're at it.
It's pretty clear from the vote and the comments on the poll post that we want this to be the equivalent of /r/games - text posts and links only. If someone needs to show off their hall effect stick mod or a photo of some dude flipping the bird, they can do it in a hardware-dedicated or circlejerk community where that kind of thing belongs (respectively).
Pictures are allowed as long as it starts a useful discussion. This is because a picture can be helpful in supporting the question or statement.
And beyond that. For moderators on Lemmy, there's pretty little that can be done. We can delete comments and posts, ban someone and lock a post to the community page. That is all there is to it.
Pictures are allowed as long as it starts a useful discussion
Are we pretending that this sort of garbage is going to start a useful discussion? It's 100% circlejerk material.
I think that would qualify as a meme though ;).
As stated in the post. Memes posted before the new rules will remain.
Edit: Lemmy bugs today... double reply.
Much appreciated
Does anyone know another community that may focus on giveaways?
Good stuff, I enjoy a good meme every once n a while but if lemmyshitpost is anything to go by, can completely overwhelm a feed with stupid stuff.
I personally voted to allow memes for the sake of growing this place quickly but I’m happy with the result. The number of votes shows that we probably already have enough active users to create meaningful discussions.
So where do we go for gaming related memes?
