I’m not sure if you’ve tried this PWA called Wefwef but it feels like a fully featured Apollo client for Lemmy already. You just go to the site and add it to your home screen. No beta to sign up for. No TestFlight link. Just add the PWA.

It’s good. It’s really really good.

30 mins in and I’ve set up a Lemmy account, logged into Wefwef, added a bunch of subscriptions and now it’s about 85% like I’m still using Reddit. Amazing, and considerably better than I could have hoped for

[–] Dee@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

Wefwef is great! I love the Apollo-export upload feature lets you find similar communities on Lemmy.

My biggest question is, will it eventually be an actual app?

[–] palebluedot@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 year ago

I honestly think that it doesn't matter - this PWA is so polished I'm forgetting that I'm not using a native app.

[–] SwallowsDick@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago

This. People want and need a real app on the official stores to migrate from Reddit. I'm using Connect right now for this reason, but I hope it gets better

[–] StenSaksTapir@feddit.dk 2 points 1 year ago

It's an actual webapp, so no, it probably won't unless they convert the codebase to react native.

I've only found a few things that I'm missing from a native experience and I'm sure it can be fixed.

Most annoyingly is the "scroll-to-top" by double tapping the top of the screen doesn't work.

Otherwise I think in terms of smoothness it's better than Mlem.

[–] fades@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yes it is really nice but still browser based at the end of the day, therefore will not be a go-to for me.

Memmy has been good to me so far

[–] andrew@radiation.party 5 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Whatever you do, don’t look at what technologies Memmy uses.

[–] Liempong_pagong@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm on android, but this got me curious.

What technology does memmy use, and why is it a concern?

@fades @African_Grey do you know if any more beta slots have been upened up for Memmy? I'm trialing Mlem right now but there's no iPad version

[–] OtakuAltair@vlemmy.net 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The one complaint I have is the lack of a native app; it doesn't run as smoothly as the other Lemmy clients do on my phone.

It's already amazing on my tablet though!

The only thing missing for me after testing for 2 days is the swipe to go back a screen. You need to reach ALLLLLL the way across to the left edge of the screen and drag it ALLLLLL the way to the right to go back to your feed from a post. In Apollo I had it configured to only need a swipe from about the middle of the screen to the right edge. It’s very hard for me to reach that far comfortably and my muscle memory is all messed up right now. I keep doing the short swipe and I upvote someone’s post instead. If they can add this I will be extremely happy.

Edit: Also, I just realized after posting this comment that Apollo also had a feature where you go forward and backward a screen by swiping left or right on the bottom section. Extremely useful as well.

[–] kkby@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

Pretty impressive! Not Apollo but close. Dismissing images is not as fluid.

[–] myofficialaccount@feddit.de 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

wefwef is the best, I really stopped caring about all the other apps being under development. Just mind that using it with Firefox really is absolutely lagging (which is kind of a shame) and that (currently) Chrome gets you the best performance. Feels like a native Android app.

It’s good, but it needs a compact view (unless I simply haven’t found the option).

[–] iamroot@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 year ago (3 children)

It has! Check appearance in settings.

+1 wefwef.app my favorite so far

[–] CptNoobCanoe@feddit.dk 4 points 1 year ago

I just tied wefwef, and it’s brilliant! It really gives the Apollo feel and even allows for multiple accounts for different instances. Feels like coming home 🙂

[–] Sp00ky94@lemmy.fmhy.ml 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I just installed Mlem and Memmy. Both have a very nice UI and are smooth. I am leaning towards Mlem though. I like swiping right to view my communities.

Edit: I was an Apollo user and reddit does not feel the same without Apollo.

[–] enki@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

I tried those 2 as well but Wefwef is really better despite being a web app.

[–] pandaontoast@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

For real, im shocked with how fluid this feels compared to everything else I have tried today. I get the occasional bad fetch for comments but thats about it so far

I'm really digging Wefwef, but I'm an android user so I feel like I'm crossing some weird rubicon of using an Apple UI from a non Apple device.

I guess what I'm saying... Ladies... Is that I'm dangerous.

[–] joebobdobbs@compuverse.uk 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

It’s good, but it needs a compact view (unless I simply haven’t found the option).

Edit: It looks like compact view arrived in the appearance settings. Nice.

Edit 2: It might need since better post error handling/feedback…

[–] Helvedeshunden@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

Check out their github to see how new this actually is. I'm blown away that it actually works most of the time and new major features arrive daily.

I'm happily using wefwef both on my phone and on my computer. It has a really a great UI to browse/keep up with lemmy.

[–] bitseek@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

This is uncanny. Thanks!

[–] clearedtoland@lemmy.fmhy.ml 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It’s as if Apollo has been reborn. How wild! I recommend giving wefwef or Memmy a try.

[–] Moonwalk@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm an Android user and I never used Apollo, but wefwef is just amazing. It works surprisingly well, especially for a PWA. It will be my app of choice at least until Sync for Lemmy is out.

[–] bmac92@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

I'm feeling the same way. Can't wait for Sync.

I love it. It’s good beehaw doesn’t allow downvoting though because I accidentally would be downvoting a lot as I try and swipe back

[–] madjo@geddit.social 2 points 1 year ago

For multilingual people. Please be aware that wefwef will fail upon posting comments, if you have selected more than 1 language in your Lemmy profile. Wefwef comes back with the error message that you need to select a language in your Lemmy profile.

[–] Mars@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

New favorite way to use lemmy.

Great design, feels responsive, works everywhere…

PWAs are great, and for 99% of use cases are more than enough. We need a fake App Store that “installs” PWAs in people devices in a transparent way.

Also let’s hope Apple is forced to open iOS to alternative rendering engines and complete full features browsers.

And for a final irony boost, the PWA thing is the “”””original”””” vision for smartphones, at least according to Steve Jobs during the original iPhone keynote. Full circle and stuff.

As an Apollo user I was very (happily) surprised at how familiar this feels, thank you! Interesting note about this app is they have a Dockerfile available which means you could host the PWA/app in your own domain. Looking at the Dockerfile this would be super easy to deploy and update.

[–] ipipip@iusearchlinux.fyi 2 points 1 year ago

This is going to be my go to app for mobile devices, thanks for making me aware of it!

[–] ehrenschwan@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

It looks really nice, kind of funny seeing the iOS-UI on Android. But I loved Apollo before switching to Android.

[–] 5cc913zx@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

This is incredible, thanks for sharing!

Woah, wefwef is awesome! Using it now!

[–] Klinkertinlegs@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

I could kiss you OP. This is the best recommendation ever!

[–] lauha@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Can I connect to other instances apart from 4 preset ones?

Edit. Yes, just go to middle icon att the bottom and log in.

[–] stoic_sloth@aussie.zone 1 points 1 year ago

Yes. The last option (other) will let you enter the URL of the instance you want.

You can then enter your credentials and proceed to use it as your new home

As an Android user, wefwef is such a fantastically designed app. I was still using an old iPhone and iPad Pro to browse Reddit as a longtime Apollo Ultra user so the UI is just perfect for my tastes.
