I'm scrolling through the front page, expanding the thumbnails of pictures to look at them etc. And then suddenly a bunch of new posts appear at the top of the feed and I lose my place. Also the current thumbnail minimizes.

Does anyone else get this effect?

I'd prefer it to stay static until I hit refresh myself.

EDIT: thanks for the speedy responses. As a new user I'd also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to those running these communities. The inter-compatible federated concept seems truly brilliant, and they must be working very hard to cope with this new influx of users like me.

Apparently it is being worked on and will come out in the 0.18.0 version https://feddit.de/comment/221556

I've been having a similar issue on and off. Not sure how to fix it, but hoping someone else here will.

Edit: Worth noting that I haven't noticed the issue while using Jerboa for Lemmy on Android.

I tried Jerboa. It seemed okay at first. But now I have lots of problems. The app can't seem to decide whether I am logged in or not. In one place it displays my username, indicating that I must be logged in, but then I click on something else and it says "not logged in".

I'm seeing that problem also, but while just using a web browser. Last night it seemed to happen all the time when viewing posts from beehaw. (I'm registered on lemmy.world FWIW.)

If you're clicking/tapping on the direct link of another community it's going to act like you're trying to log in to that community rather than subscribe to that community, if that makes any sense. You're basically bouncing from one website to another rather than getting that information sent to your "home". It didn't make a ton of sense to me either when I started.

good to know it's being worked on. it's one of my biggest struggles right now.

I haven't started using an app yet since I'm brand new and haven't fully decided if I'm going to stick around or leave this type of aggregation site behind (let's be honest, that's not likely)

Yeah, I'm struggling with the same thing. Trying to figure out how to get the equivalent of r/all coming from reddit as it's a great way to both see new popular content as well as discover new communities but within 10 seconds, brand new posts pop up at the top of the list and everything moves.

[–] wazoobonkerbrain@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Same here. And what's weird is... if I'm on Local, then the top posts have thousands of upvotes. If I click on All, then all of the new posts that come sputtering through have like one upvote each. They also seem to come in batches. Like I'll get half a dozen posts from the same user, then another half dozen from some obscure forum. It feels like when the app goes out beyond its own instance to load content from other instances then it does a terrible job of throttling the feed.

I use a Disable Javascript addon. Downside is you have to turn it back on when you want to comment or vote. But fully stops the auto refresh. This is what I use for Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/disable-javascript/?utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=search
