he pleaded not guilty. and his lawyer said this is "an attack on america".
'cause he had boxes of papers he wasn't supposed to have, that this is an attack on america? yeah, okay π

This is gonna be wild... the feds hardly ever lose.
With that, I'm very curious to see the fallout should he be convicted.
i'm a little worried some of his cultists may find their way onto the jury and block a conviction
All it takes is one. Theyβll refuse to consider anything other than not guilty.
the rest of the jury can ask the judge to remove one who is not deliberating in good faith
I work with many people who are so upset over this, calling it injustice and how horrible that we choose to prosecute Trump when we should instead be jailing Hillary, Harris, and Biden.
I bite my tongue and donβt say anything but itβs so frustrating.
As far as Hillary goes I am not sure why Trump's DoJ didn't hand down an indictment if it had evidence that she ultimately committed a crime? I guess the same is true for Hunter.
To my knowledge and I am prefacing this with I could be wrong. In order to charge Hillary for the email incident they would have had to prove either Intent or Gross negligence and when it came down to Hillary I dont think the Doj had anything along the lines of these two factors, whereas trump and they even qoute him, hes talking about how the information is still classified but yada yada this happened, that fills the intent part and then for the gross negligence part they talk about how they found the boxes of files just strewn about everywhere in the club.
Feel free to correct me, this is just my understanding.
He's just a walking blizzard of dishonesty.
Excellent. May his orange jumpsuit soon follow.
I'm just sad that federal mugshots aren't made public.
No mugshot "because the president is recognizable" EDIT: "Trump is easily recognizable" I guess that's a thing, though I've never heard of it being used before. EDIT, I didn't quote it right, and @Powderhorn@beehaw.org caught me :)
The president certainly is recognizable ... thing is, he's a dead ringer for Joe Biden.
So much unprecedented stuff has happened since his term, but I don't think anyway was ever confident he would actually stand trial for a federal jury.
This title is a little misleading. No, Trump has not been arrested but he did appear in court. He is not in any form of jail (yet).
We need one of those mod appliable (or vote-appliable?) "Misleading title" or "headline altered" tags maybe
the Justice Department recommended the defendants be released with no financial or special conditions as they aren't a "flight risk."
Being βarrestedβ is not the way I remember it
Biden returned the documents before they even know they were gone and he was the one who told them he had them. Trump refused to return the documents when they were requested back and he is caught on tape admitting to knowing he wasn't supposed to have them. Also he asked his lawyers to destroy evidence.
Huge difference between a crime with someone cooperating and someone who tries to destroy evidence. Also the content of trump's documents seem like they're higher level and more highly classified.
I guess it's already happened, but this time seems like a bigger deal
This is a bigger deal. These federal charges are way more serious than what he's facing in New York.
This is the biggest deal, imo. Having nuclear secrets, audio of him admitting he was breaking the law - and the public knowing about that, to me says they have much more ammo they'll be bringing to light in trial. I think he's screwed. I don't want to hold my breath, but this seems like it will really take him down.
This is a bigger deal. Telling authorities you don't have top secret classified documents at your residence and allowing them to search certain rooms and then having them come back later with a warrant and finding them hidden in a bathroom (that they weren't allowed into originally) is really really bad.
It makes his other charge of using campaign donations for personal reasons look like jaywalking.
He was processed in New York, too. I'm going to guess that he's going to go through this process at least once more (in Georgia). I don't think he'll need to be fingerprinted and processed again if there are other federal charges while these are pending, but charges related to Jan. 6 might change his bail or conditions of release.
AP news says Trump will be released without bond
Trump will be released without having to pay a bond. He will not have to surrender his passport or restrict his personal travel.
Meanwhile, someone allegedly steals a backpack in NYC and languishes in jail for years, then dies without ever having their trial.
that is so infuriating to me. no one should be above the law; trump and his cronies say the same thing. with so many americans getting profiled and wrongfully arrested and sentenced this makes me beyond angry
So under arrest really means he checked into the courts and said "Yup, I am fighting this legal charge." and walked away.
Well tbh both his ego and his bank account command him to try to run for president again so I don't see him fleeing.
Cool, but remove this caps lock please.
It's in Trump tweet font
It's the original formatting from the news site. And anyway, if I wanted to format it differently, I would have.
A little on a tangent here but...
I'm guessing News and World news will, again and like in Reddit, be actually USANews. Let's see what the fediverse and instances do bring to that issue.
That would probably depend on which instance you're using.
Unless I'm misunderstanding how this all works.
Justice.
Don't care who it is, I,D,R,G,L, you break the law to this extent you get punished.
Nobody is above the law.
Fucker needs to rot in prison!
Lock him up!
Desinformation. Trump has not been arrested.
He was arrested, booked, fingerprinted, and formally charged on 37 counts then released on the condition that he avoid contact with potential witnesses in his upcoming trial.
I like everything that inconveniences him, even though I am not entirely sure they will get him this time. He's kinda rich after all and that's how it is.
Being rich isn't as much of a defense when you've pissed off the DoD and there's recorded audio of you admitting you have illegally held nuclear secrets after lying and saying you didn't.
I get the worry though.
I am from Poland and didn't really follow the whole case. Can someone explain me why there is a thread that he will be arrested? It is hard to find the origin as the whole case exploded.
He took top secret documents when he left the white house. They don't belong to him, they're meant to be secured in the library of congress or something. Anyway, librarians tried to get them back, he said no, did a bunch of illegal shit (including flashing them around people he wanted to impress) so FBI got involved, raided his place, found more secret documents, special prosecutor was appointed who took ages really nailing the iron clad case together. Now he been arraigned in court facing federal charges. Because Trumps a dumb shit.
There's a LegalEagle video which sums it up: Trump's Bombshell Federal Document Indictment
Essentially,
The first bullet point apparently happens often (Biden, Pence, Hillary have all done similarly in the past). Trump is singular in that he didn't readily comply with the request for the return of documents and the consequent lies to the government (also illegal).
I'd like to see him manage to wiggle his way out of this one. I'm not American so I'm not familiar with the systems in place and all, but from everything I've seen, well... it's not looking good for him. At all.
But honestly, with Trump legendary incompetence and ability to keep on digging his own grave, I'm barely here for the politics, this is just good entertainment at this point. Even if I know that while this is funny, this will probably be remembered as anything but.
Trump is arrested and Kutcher scores $2bn. Seems to me like he got played by his own son-in-law.
I don't want to get my hopes up, but this feels very "end of the line" for him.
