Maybe you don’t always have to be right? Is this coming from people just trying to have a casual conversation? When I’m in that situation I usually just say something basic like β€œoh interesting!” then move the conversation in a different direction.

For people that say they do stupid stuff simply because they have the right to, I say this in return:

"Well I have the right to wipe my ass with a pinecone, but that doesn't mean it's the right thing to do."
