I've definitely turned into the paranoid nutcase within my friend group in recent years, I hate that everything is "smart" nowadays requiring an app/internet connection & account, just to do basic things that didn't require any of that before.

What's some things currently making you ramble like an old man?

It’s not difficult to blame the boomers. They grew up with the countries best safety net and support and then proceeded to pull up the ladder after them.

And it’s only when they complain about younger people when it really comes up.

Well, my parents didn't have any such benefits (and generally had much harder life than my generation), and didn't pull any ladder, yet they are "guilty" by the virtue of being born in the wrong years.

Doesn't seem right to me.

And it’s only when they complain about younger people when it really comes up.

Nah, it comes up all the time on social media on its own.

What’s their behavior like now? Comparing that kids have it too easy? Advocating for not improving things because they had it tougher? If no, they aren’t the problem and shouldn’t feel it’s directed to them.

"boomers" is a name of a generation, not of political affiliation or attitude to youngsters. People don't choose their year of birth.

It's not much different from e.g. gender or racial stereotyping and what you're saying is pretty similar to "if you're not lazy, don't feel offended, you can think of yourself as honorary white".

It's more a mindset than a generation. Someone that just happens to have been born during those years that possess none of those traits is not going to be criticized. Millennials and Gen Z get lumped together on certain topics too, and it doesn't really matter the year they were born but the opinion they are backing.

Rewrite this with "black" instead of "boomer" and see how it looks like.

What's your version of fox news? Somethings crammed a bunch of bigoted stereotypes into your brain.

[–] phillaholic@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

How could you possibly construe "shouldn't feel it's directed to them" into bigoted stereotypes? You shouldn't feel any allegiance to a stereotype, so if you don't have those qualities why are you defending those that do?

That is true. But don’t forget the boomers tried to overthrow the establishment/capitalism and were literally beaten. Civil rights, feminism were the boomers. They tried to change the system at the ‘68 Democratic convention and were hosed and beaten. Yes, they gave up and sold out, but at least a large portion of counter culture hippies tried. A lot of us would do it again, when the time is right.

It's not until the 80s where it became a large problem. At that point you have some early Gen X involved. The mindset is all the same. Greed. I don't think the Hippies lost as much as they are remembered far better or larger than they actually were.

Pick up any book written on US History Post World War 2 and continue through at least the 1980s.
