Nov 19 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden has approved provision of anti-personnel land mines to Ukraine, a U.S. official told Reuters, a step that could help slow Russian advances in its east, especially when used along with other munitions from the United States.

The United States expects Ukraine to use the mines in its own territory, though it has committed not to use them in areas populated with its own civilians, the official said. The Washington Post first reported the development.

Russia’s state-owned news agency Tass, citing Russia’s ministry of defence, has reported that the debris fell on a military facility in the Bryansk region. It said there was a small fire.

The ministry said it had shot down five of the missiles over the Bryansk region. The attack resulted in no casualties or damage, it said.

The claims have not been independently verified. Ukraine has not commented on the Russian reports, and there has been no confirmation from US or other allied powers

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday signed a revised nuclear doctrine declaring that a conventional attack on Russia by any nation that is supported by a nuclear power will be considered a joint attack on his country.

The signing of the doctrine, which says that any massive aerial attack on Russia could trigger a nuclear response, reflects Putin’s readiness to threaten use of the country’s nuclear arsenal to force the West to back down as Moscow presses a slow-moving offensive in Ukraine.

Eight soldiers of the Svoboda Battalion of the 4th Rubizh Rapid Reaction Brigade held the defense near the village of Spirne near Siversk for 67 days. The last three weeks of which they were defending themselves in the encirclement.

On September 16, a Russian assault force attacked the stronghold with two tanks, two armored personnel carriers, and an infantry fighting vehicle, from which an entire assault platoon was landed. The soldiers repelled the attack and destroyed the entire enemy assault squad, but unfortunately, one of the National Guardsmen was killed. After that, it was decided to withdraw the soldiers from the position. During the defense of the position, supported by drones with provisions and fire, Svoboda fighters managed to destroy five dozen invaders and six pieces of equipment.
